The Town Hall of Tomares has named the former Municipal Nursery after teacher Emilia Tubío Herrera, which now houses the Municipal Centre for Women's Information, the Early Childhood Care Centre, and the Educational Guidance Team. The naming was unanimously approved in the plenary session on 18 February.
The Town Hall of Tomares has paid tribute to the figure of teacher Emilia Tubío Herrera, one of the most beloved educators in the municipality, by naming the municipal building that houses the Municipal Centre for Women's Information (CMIM), the Early Childhood Care Centre, and the Educational Guidance Team. The naming ceremony took place on Thursday, 9 July, and was attended by family members and former students.
The plaque was unveiled by the Mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, alongside the honouree's daughter, Emilia Caracuel Tubío, and her granddaughter, Marta Martínez-Darve Caracuel. The mayor highlighted that "there are people who leave an indelible mark" and that Emilia Tubío was "a very beloved teacher, not only for what she taught but for the affection she gave to her students."
A unanimous recognition from the municipal plenary
The naming of the building, located on Calle Españoleto, in the Las Almenas area, was unanimously approved by all political groups in the Municipal Corporation during the plenary session on 18 February 2026. The property, which functioned for years as a municipal nursery, now hosts key services for the community: the CMIM, the Early Childhood Care Centre, and the Educational Guidance Team.
The mayor emphasized that the building "will now be called Emilia Tubío Herrera" as a recognition "more than deserved for an unforgettable person who dedicated her life to others." The municipal decision aims to perpetuate the memory of an educator who influenced several generations of residents of Tomares.
Emilia Tubío: a life dedicated to teaching
Emilia Tubío Herrera was born in Fuentes de Andalucía on 9 April 1913, being the eldest of eleven siblings. To be able to study, she balanced night classes with daytime work until, on 31 January 1931, at the age of 18, she obtained the title of national teacher "by competitive examination," as she liked to remember.
After teaching in La Rinconada, she arrived in Tomares in 1948 to teach at the Tomás de Ybarra school group. There she coincided with Antonia Caracuel, her sister-in-law and also a teacher, who already has a street named after her in the municipality. Emilia balanced her teaching work with raising her five children; the youngest was born when she was already a teacher in Tomares. Her last years of teaching were spent at the San Jacinto school in Seville, where she retired in 1977. She passed away on 12 April 1997.
Those who knew her remember her as a passionate teacher, who was ahead of her time in seeking an integral and personalised education for girls, taking an interest in their family circumstances and maintaining constant communication with families. She also fostered the Christian spirit with which the educational institution was founded.
The new municipal centre, named after her, thus becomes a space that will continue to provide essential services to the community, keeping alive the legacy of service of this teacher. The residents of Tomares can visit the CMIM, the Early Childhood Care Centre, and the Educational Guidance Team on Calle Españoleto, opposite CEIP Juan Ramón Jiménez.
