The PP of Seville has denounced an operation by the PSOE to oust the popular mayor María Eugenia Moreno through a motion of censure with the vote of a turncoat councillor. The plenary session will be held on 24 July.

The Popular Party of Seville has focused on Huévar del Aljarafe. The party denounces a pact of political turncoats orchestrated by the PSOE to seize the mayoralty from María Eugenia Moreno of the PP, using the decisive vote of Isabel María Romero, a councillor who entered the Town Hall on the popular list.

The motion of censure is already signed. It is supported by the four socialist councillors, one councillor from Ciudadanos, and Romero herself, now an independent councillor. The candidate for the mayoralty is the socialist spokesperson, Israel Álvarez. The plenary session to debate the initiative is scheduled for 24 July.

"The PSOE did not win the mayoralty with the votes of the residents and now intends to conquer it thanks to the mandate of a councillor elected precisely to support a Popular Party government," the PP has pointed out.

An operation that demands total transparency

The popular party has demanded that the PSOE and Isabel María Romero make the full agreement of the motion public. They want to know if delegations, exclusive commitments, remuneration, or positions of trust have been negotiated. "Residents have the right to know what has been agreed and what will be received in exchange for supporting the change of government," they insist.

For the PP, compliance with the law is not enough. "An operation may formally adhere to the procedure and still be profoundly disloyal to the will expressed by citizens at the polls," they warn.

The turncoat councillor and her responsibilities

Isabel María Romero's departure from the Popular Municipal Group occurred after the mayor informed her of her intention to withdraw the delegated responsibilities due to a loss of trust. Following that notice, Romero left the group, retained her mandate, and became an independent. Her vote is now key for the PSOE to regain power.

"First she lost the trust of the governing team; then she retained a mandate obtained under the PP banner; and now she uses it to hand the Town Hall over to the PSOE. Residents deserve an explanation," the popular party maintains.

The shadow of the PSOE's judicial past

The motion comes two days after the trial against former socialist mayors Rafael Moreno and Áurea Moreno was concluded. The Prosecutor's Office is seeking twelve years of disqualification for each for an alleged continued crime of prevarication in the hiring of 21 residents between 2014 and 2019. The accused deny the charges and maintain their presumption of innocence.

The PP links both events: "Huévar del Aljarafe has just witnessed a trial regarding a period in which, according to the accusation, hiring was done without respecting the rules. Two days later, the PSOE attempts to return to power through a majority fabricated in offices."

The popular party has made it clear that it will defend the mandate of the residents and demand transparency. "The PSOE intends to achieve through political defection what it could not achieve with votes. It may gather six signatures, but those six signatures do not erase how each councillor obtained their mandate," they conclude.

The residents of Huévar del Aljarafe are called to closely follow the plenary session on 24 July, where the future of their Town Hall will be decided. Meanwhile, the PP assures that it will not relent in its defense of the popular will.
