The 29-year-old priest from Córdoba replaces Luis Merello Govantes, the historic parish priest who led for half a century. His appointment has been welcomed with enthusiasm among the parishioners.

Last July, the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Los Palacios and Villafranca welcomed a new parish priest. His name is Germán Carrasco, he is 29 years old and comes from the mining region of Córdoba, although he trained at the Seminary of Seville under the auspices of the Brotherhood of Macarena. His appointment, far from generating uncertainty, has been received as a breath of fresh air by a community that for half a century was led by Luis Merello Govantes, the priest from El Puerto de Santa María who earned the title of Adoptive Son of the municipality.

A young priest with training and approachability

Germán Carrasco had only been a parish vicar for three years at Santa María la Blanca, the other major church in the town, under the guidance of Diego Pérez Ojeda. There, he built a reputation as a close priest, with solid theological studies and, additionally, on the verge of completing his Law degree. "He looks each person in the eye when he speaks to them," those who know him highlight. This is no small detail in an ecclesiastical context where the lack of vocations is a pressing problem: in half a century, seminaries have gone from being full to dioceses with elderly pastors without replacements.

The parish of the Sacred Heart, which recently celebrated its Golden Jubilee, serves around 20,000 parishioners and is the epicentre of the Casas Baratas neighbourhood. There, important brotherhoods such as La Borriquita and the Rocío have their headquarters, in addition to a parish association under the patronage of Mary Help of Christians. The new parish priest will have the support of Julián Hernández, a parish vicar with nearly 40 years of experience in the role. For the residents of Los Palacios, the combination of youth and experience is a guarantee of continuity.

The challenge of succeeding a legend

Replacing Luis Merello Govantes was no easy task. Don Luis, as he is popularly known, managed over half a century to ensure that even those who did not set foot in the church recognised his social and pastoral work. "That is true evangelising," parishioners comment. But Germán Carrasco has quickly shown that he is not only up to the task but also connects with the youth and understands the limits of pastoral action. "He is not easily deceived, he is no fool," community members assert. His profile, trained and eager, was what many expected to ensure continuity in a historically active parish.

The appointment comes in the middle of summer, but it will be in September, with the start of the liturgical year, when the parish fully begins under his leadership. Parishioners trust that the new priest will invigorate the parish groups and keep alive the spirit of service that has characterised the community. And as the Gospels of Matthew and Luke remind us, "the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few."

A canonical coronation on the horizon

Looking ahead to 2027, Germán Carrasco has an important milestone: the canonical Coronation of Our Lady of Remedies, the Lady of Furraque, which has been awaiting this recognition for five centuries. The new parish priest has contributed from the diplomatic front at the Archbishop's Palace to make this event a reality. It will be a key moment for popular devotion in Los Palacios and Villafranca, where the Virgin of Remedies is venerated in the chapel of San Sebastián. "We need discourses that relativise the absolute truths constructed down here," wrote Sánchez Ferlosio, and in times of extremism, the work of a young priest who looks people in the eye may be more necessary than ever.

The residents of the Casas Baratas neighbourhood have already welcomed him as one of their own. The upcoming year presents the uncertainty of how the transition will unfold, but with the certainty that the parish of the Sacred Heart has a future. And not only that: it also has a parish priest who, at under 30, has already demonstrated that youth is not at odds with wisdom or faith.
