The Mairena del Aljarafe Town Hall has launched 'Mairena Al Día', an ambitious modernisation plan for essential services equipped with €11.3 million. The project, presented this Wednesday by Mayor Antonio Conde, will address everything from gardening to public lighting within a two-year timeframe.
The Mairena del Aljarafe Town Hall has put forth the largest expenditure on basic services in its recent history. With a budget of €11.3 million, the 'Mairena Al Día' plan promises to transform the daily lives of residents with actions across six key areas: gardening, pavements, tree pits, lighting, public schools, and municipal vehicles.
Mayor Antonio Conde presented the initiative this Wednesday, July 8, at an event where he acknowledged that current services “were becoming inadequate for today’s Mairena.” The mayor emphasised that these everyday tasks “are key to residents' lives because when they work, they represent quality of life.”
Gardening and pavements: the largest allocations
The renewal of the gardening service will involve an investment of €2.05 million over two years, extendable for another two. The aim is to maintain the parks and green areas of the municipality, which total over 300,000 square metres of landscaped surface, in optimal condition.
Regarding pavements, urban surfaces, and asphalting, the Town Hall will allocate €2.4 million, also for two extendable years. This allocation will allow for the repair of pavements lifted by roots, replacement of broken tiles, and improvement of road surfaces in the busiest neighbourhoods.
Public lighting and schools: efficiency and savings
The largest allocation of the plan, €5.8 million, will be dedicated to the comprehensive renewal of public lighting throughout the municipality, with an initial execution period of one year. Old luminaires will be replaced with LED technology, which is expected to result in an estimated 60% energy savings on the municipal bill.
Public educational centres will also be improved. The Town Hall has set aside €576,000 for a new painting service in schools, lasting two extendable years. The work will include both the interior and exterior of the buildings, some of which have not been repainted for over a decade.
Additionally, €400,000 will be invested in renewing the tree pits in the locality, with a six-month execution period. This measure aims to prevent tree roots from damaging pavements and improve pedestrian accessibility.
Municipal vehicles and long-term planning
The plan also includes the renewal of two vehicles for infrastructure services, with an investment of €128,000. This involves a van and a truck that will replace units over 15 years old.
The Town Hall explains that 'Mairena Al Día' is the result of a process initiated in 2023, following the renewal of the street cleaning service. Since then, the Town Hall has developed the necessary technical, administrative, and contracting planning to progressively address the updating of other essential services.
For residents, the impact will be visible in the short term. The first actions will begin in the coming weeks in the neighbourhoods of Ciudad Expo and El Pinar, where pavements and lighting will be addressed. The mayor has assured that the works will be executed in phases to minimise inconvenience.
With this plan, Mairena del Aljarafe joins the trend of municipalities in Aljarafe that are modernising their basic infrastructures. However, it remains to be seen whether the deadlines will be met or, as often happens in these cases, bureaucracy will consume part of the budget. For now, residents can already dream of better-lit streets and pothole-free pavements.
