The Town Council continues its summer campaign against high temperatures, paying special attention to the elderly living alone and dependent individuals. The Local Police and Social Welfare conduct periodic follow-ups, which intensify with weather alerts.

The Town Hall of Tomares has launched its municipal campaign against the heat once again this summer, an initiative that this year reinforces the monitoring of the most vulnerable groups in the municipality. The Local Police and the Social Welfare department coordinate a system that combines phone calls and in-person visits to check on the well-being of the elderly living alone and dependent individuals.

During these contacts, officers and social workers provide practical advice for coping with high temperatures and verify that residents have the necessary resources, such as water, fresh food, or cooling systems. The follow-up intensifies when heat weather alerts are activated, aiming to prevent risks and ensure the safety of those who need it most.

Recommendations for the entire population

The Town Council insists on a series of simple measures to protect against the heat. It recommends drinking water frequently without waiting to feel thirsty, avoiding alcoholic beverages, sugary drinks, coffee, or tea, and cooling off with showers or applying cold water. It also advises opting for light meals such as salads, fruits, vegetables, or juices, and seeking shade during the hottest hours of the day.

Outdoors, it reminds everyone of the importance of protecting the head with a hat or cap, applying high-factor sunscreen, and wearing sunglasses with ultraviolet filters. Lightweight clothing in light colours and breathable fabrics helps reduce the thermal sensation. Additionally, it urges to reduce intense physical activity between 12:00 and 17:00, when the sun is at its strongest.

Advice for the home and car

The Town Hall recommends keeping homes as cool as possible by lowering blinds when the sun directly hits the windows and using fans or cooling systems responsibly. It also reminds that people or pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, even for a short period, as temperatures inside can soar in minutes.

The campaign calls for special attention to the elderly, young children, and those with chronic illnesses. Neighbours who know someone in a vulnerable situation can inform the Local Police or municipal social services to include them in the follow-up.

For residents of Tomares, this initiative provides additional support during the summer months. The Local Police are available 24 hours a day to address any unforeseen circumstances or emergencies related to the heat. Those wishing for more information can contact the Social Welfare department during public service hours.
