José Luis Sanz meets this Monday with executives from Air Canada in Montreal to explore a direct air connection between Seville and Canada. The mission includes contacts with tech companies and the Four Seasons chain.
The Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, is leading an institutional and commercial mission in Montreal (Canada) starting this Monday with the aim of promoting a direct air connection between the Andalusian capital and the North American country. The municipal delegation, which includes the delegate for Tourism and Culture, Angie Moreno, has met with executives from Air Canada at the airline's headquarters to explore new routes that enhance the international connectivity of Seville airport.
A Strategy to Attract High-Value Investment and Tourism
The trip is part of the municipal government's internationalisation strategy to position Seville as a preferred destination for investment, technological development, and high-quality tourism. According to sources from the City Council, the mission aims not only to improve air connections but also to attract Canadian companies from the tech sector, one of the fastest-growing and most innovative fields in Canada.
During their stay, the delegation will hold meetings with representatives from the Four Seasons hotel chain, a Canadian company that will open its first ultra-luxury establishment in Andalusia, specifically in Plaza Nueva in Seville. This project, according to the City Council, demonstrates the confidence of major international brands in the city.
“This commercial mission responds to a very clear strategy: to seek opportunities for Seville, attract investment, generate jobs, and continue consolidating our city as one of the great economic, technological, and tourist capitals of southern Europe,” declared José Luis Sanz.
The mayor added that Canada represents a market with enormous potential for Seville and that the opening of the future Four Seasons confirms that the city has become an attractive destination for high-quality hotel investment.
What Does This Mean for the Seville Traveller?
If realised, the direct Seville-Montreal route would allow residents of the province to access North America without layovers, reducing travel times and facilitating trips for tourism or business. Currently, flying to Canada from Seville requires a stopover in Madrid, Barcelona, or other European hubs, which extends the journey by several hours.
Moreover, the connection would benefit the local tourism sector, as it would facilitate the arrival of Canadian visitors, a market with high purchasing power. According to data from the City Council, Canada is one of the countries that has increased its interest in Seville the most in recent years, with sustained growth in overnight stays.
The mission also includes contacts with Canadian tech companies, aiming for them to establish development centres or headquarters in Seville. The municipal government is confident that the combination of air connectivity and investment appeal will boost the local economy.
Next Steps and Timelines
The meetings with Air Canada focus on analysing the technical and commercial viability of the route. There is not yet a specific date for its possible launch, but municipal sources indicate that this is a process that could materialise in the coming months if negotiations progress favourably.
Meanwhile, the delegation continues its agenda with business meetings until the end of the week. The results of this mission will be announced at a press conference upon the mayor's return, scheduled for the end of the week.
