A driver has tested positive for THC and cocaine after being involved in an accident on the A-8063 in Nueva Sevilla, crashing into a railing. The incident occurred on July 6 and was initially attended by the Local Police of Castilleja de la Cuesta.
A 34-year-old driver tested positive for THC (cannabis) and cocaine after crashing his car into the protective railing that separates the roadway from the bike lane on the A-8063, passing through the Nueva Sevilla area. The accident occurred around 14:30 on Monday, July 6, according to the Local Police of Castilleja de la Cuesta.
Officers from this department, who were conducting preventive surveillance in the area, responded to the scene after hearing the loud impact. Upon arrival, they found the vehicle stopped and the driver outside of it, showing clear signs of being under the influence of some substance.
Coordinated intervention between local police
The officers from Castilleja de la Cuesta confirmed that the metal railing had been completely torn out and that the material damage was considerable. After providing initial assistance and securing the area, they notified the Local Police of Tomares, the competent authority for that road, who arrived to take over the investigation.
In coordination, the Tomares officers conducted a breathalyser test on the driver, which returned a negative result of 0.00 mg/l. However, due to the symptoms he exhibited (red eyes, slurred speech, and slow movements), it was decided to carry out a drug detection test.
Positive for two substances and legal consequences
The test result was positive for THC (the active ingredient in cannabis) and cocaine, as confirmed by sources from the Local Police of Castilleja de la Cuesta. The driver, who was not seriously injured, was taken to police facilities for the processing of proceedings.
The Local Police of Tomares has taken over the investigation of the accident and will determine the corresponding penalties. Driving under the influence of drugs is classified as a crime against road safety under Article 379 of the Penal Code, with prison sentences of 3 to 6 months, fines of 6 to 12 months, or community service, in addition to the withdrawal of the driving licence for 1 to 4 years.
The Provincial Traffic Headquarters reminds that driving under the influence of drugs multiplies the risk of suffering a fatal accident by up to 7 times. So far this year, several similar accidents have been recorded in the Aljarafe, leading to intensified controls on the roads of the region.
Recommendations for drivers
Authorities recommend that drivers do not get behind the wheel if they have consumed any psychoactive substance, even if some time has passed since ingestion. In case of doubt, the best option is to choose public transport or designate an alternative driver.
The accident in Nueva Sevilla did not cause any injuries, but the damage to the infrastructure will require the railing to be repaired, which could affect traffic in the coming days. It is expected that the replacement work will begin this week.
