Architect Juan José Montoya Ramos has presented the project for the musealisation of the Antonio Mairena Convention Centre, a flexible and reversible space funded by the Junta de Andalucía.

Architect Juan José Montoya Ramos has presented at the Casa Palacio in Mairena del Alcor the project for the musealisation of the future Antonio Mairena Convention Centre. The initiative, funded by the Junta de Andalucía, proposes a versatile cultural facility aimed at preserving and disseminating the artistic legacy of the master of cante jondo through a technological and immersive approach.

A flexible and participatory design

The technical proposal stands out for its reversible approach, separating the infrastructure from the definitive inventory of goods currently validated by the Town Hall. The museum will be structured under a strategy of multiple voices, replacing the singular narrative with the cross-testimonies of researchers, artists, flamencologists, and the local community itself.

To facilitate this experience, multi-channel audio systems and non-invasive interactive devices will be installed in the various exhibition rooms. The residents of Mairena del Alcor will be able to actively participate in defining the contents, contributing memories and objects that enrich the exhibition.

Spatial zoning

The new facility, located on the ground floor of the complex on Camino de las Minas street, will be structured into three main thematic areas. The first area will delve into the figure of the artist, addressing milestones such as the obtaining of the III Llave de Oro del Cante in 1962 and his work in the social dignification of flamenco.

The second block will explore the origins, family roots, and artistic consecration of the cantaor in Mairena del Alcor. Finally, a third space will analyse the significance of his doctrine and legacy following his death in 1983, including the succession of his direct disciples.

Multipurpose infrastructure

The project includes equipping the complex with a temporary exhibition hall on its upper floor. This space will function as a flexible container with direct access to the patio of the Casa Palacio, thus facilitating the celebration of cultural activities that are autonomous and independent of the main exhibition.

The design aims to ensure the relevance of the facilities against future updates of the museum contents. The residents will enjoy a space that not only honours the memory of Antonio Mairena but also adapts to the changing needs of the community.

The Town Hall of Mairena del Alcor expects construction to begin at the end of 2026, with an estimated execution period of 18 months. Once completed, the centre will become a cultural reference for the entire province of Seville.
