The Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council and community associations join forces to implement separate collection of bio-waste. The brown bin will gradually reach the entire city.
The Alcalá de Guadaíra City Council has begun the rollout of the brown bin for organic waste, and it is doing so with the help of residents. The delegate for Citizen Participation, Teresa García, along with the manager of Aira Gestión Ambiental, Juan Borrego, and the president of the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations, Manuel Pan, held a meeting with community representatives to present the plan.
A project that started in 2022
The initiative is not new. As García explained, the model began to be designed in 2022 with the 'Door to Door' service for large generators, and continued in 2024 with a pilot experience in the neighbourhoods of Campo Alegre and Nueva Alcalá. It is now expanding to the whole city.
The aim is to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and to produce compost. Bio-waste includes scraps of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, coffee grounds, eggshells, and small plant remains.
“The participation of our neighbours is essential to continue building a more conscious and environmentally respectful Alcalá,” assured Teresa García.
Associations, key in information
The rollout will be gradual, and community entities will play a fundamental role as a channel for information and awareness. The implementation will be accompanied by an information campaign in which recycling kits with aerated ten-litre bins and compostable bags will be distributed, along with educational materials.
For the residents of Alcalá, this means a change in their daily routine: they will need to separate organic waste at home and deposit it in the new bin. The City Council hopes that community collaboration will ensure the success of the measure, which has already worked in the pilot test.
Manuel Pan, president of the Federation of Neighbourhood Associations, positively evaluated the meeting and committed to relaying the information to the neighbourhoods. “It is another step towards a more sustainable city,” he noted.
Next steps
In the coming weeks, the implementation schedule by areas will be announced. Residents will receive the kits and instructions for the correct use of the brown bin at their homes. The campaign will also include information points in the neighbourhoods.
With this measure, Alcalá de Guadaíra joins other municipalities in the province that have already implemented selective collection of bio-waste, in line with European circular economy regulations.
