The Sevillian municipality of Fuentes de Andalucía has recorded 43.1 degrees at 16:50 on Sunday, becoming the hottest locality in Spain. It is followed by Alburquerque (Badajoz) with 42.8 and Andújar (Jaén) with 42.7.

The mercury shows no mercy in the province of Seville. Fuentes de Andalucía has crowned itself this Sunday as the warmest point in the whole country, with 43.1 degrees at 16:50, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). The Hispalense locality thus surpasses Alburquerque (Badajoz), which recorded 42.8 degrees in the same time frame.

The weather station at Seville airport has also suffered the heat's onslaught, marking 42.6 degrees at 17:20, a figure that matches the Badajoz locality of Olivenza. In the list of the six hottest municipalities in Spain, four are Andalusian: in addition to Fuentes de Andalucía and the capital Seville, Andújar (Jaén) with 42.7 and El Granado (Huelva) with 42.5 also appear.

The record of the year is still far away

Although thermometers have surpassed the 43-degree barrier in Fuentes de Andalucía, the highest record of the year remains that of Montoro (Córdoba), which reached 45.1 degrees on June 23. This data puts into perspective this second heatwave of the summer, which has already accumulated three days of extreme temperatures.

For the residents of the province, the thermal sensation is even more stifling due to humidity. Those who have to go out into the street during the central hours of the day must take extreme precautions: constant hydration, avoiding direct sunlight, and not engaging in physical exertion.

Orange alert for this Monday in Seville

Aemet has activated an orange alert for high temperatures in the Sevillian countryside for this Monday, July 6, where maximums of 42 degrees are expected between 13:00 and 21:00. The provinces of Córdoba, Huelva, and Jaén are also on orange alert, while Cádiz and Granada have a yellow alert.

The heat will not relent at least until Wednesday, according to forecasts. The Sierra Norte and Campiña regions will be the most affected, with tropical nights that will hinder rest. Health services recommend paying special attention to the elderly and children.

"We recommend that the population avoid going out during the hottest hours, drink water frequently, and not leave anyone inside a parked vehicle," said a spokesperson for the Health Department of the Junta de Andalucía.

In the capital, the City Council has activated the heat emergency protocol, which includes the opening of day centres as climate shelters and the reinforcement of care for homeless individuals. Residents of neighbourhoods like the Casco Antiguo or Triana, where narrow streets retain heat, are the ones who suffer the most from these temperatures.

What to expect in the coming days?

Aemet expects temperatures to remain very high on Monday and Tuesday, with a possible slight decrease starting Wednesday. However, the feeling of muggy heat will persist due to the arrival of easterly winds. In the province of Seville, municipalities in the Campiña, such as Fuentes de Andalucía or Marchena, will again be in the spotlight of heat maps.

Meanwhile, farmers in the area are looking to the sky with concern: the lack of rain and high temperatures are taking a toll on cereal and sunflower crops. "We urgently need water," summarised a farmer from the region, who prefers not to give his name.

For the rest of the week, uncertainty is the norm. The only sure thing is that the heat is not going on holiday. The Sevillians, accustomed to living with the sun, will have to arm themselves with patience, fans, and plenty of air conditioning.
