The Sevillian municipality of Lebrija is preparing for one of the most anticipated astronomical phenomena of the year. Next Wednesday, August 12, a partial solar eclipse will cover 93.77% of the solar disc in the locality, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN).
The eclipse will begin at 19:42:43 hours and will reach its maximum at 20:38:21 hours, at which point the darkening will reach 93.89%. The phenomenon will last approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes, although it will not be fully visible in Lebrija: sunset is expected at 21:19:23 hours, meaning the last phases will be hidden below the horizon.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) forecasts clear skies for that day, with temperatures ranging between 20 and 40 degrees and a 0% chance of precipitation. If conditions remain stable, the observation of the eclipse can be carried out without meteorological obstacles.
Recommendations for safe observation
The Government of Spain has issued a series of tips for enjoying the eclipse safely. The main warning is not to look directly at the Sun without proper eye protection. During the partial phases, it is essential to use specific eclipse glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2:2015 standard, and to ensure they come from a reliable source and that the filters are free from scratches, distortions, or perforations.
Conventional sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection, no matter how dark they are. Objects such as CDs, X-rays, or smoked glass should also not be used as makeshift filters. The observation will take place in the middle of August and at a time when high temperatures can still be recorded. Therefore, it is recommended to drink water frequently, seek shaded areas, and wear light, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing, as well as to take the usual sun protection measures.
If you decide to travel to see the eclipse, authorities advise planning routes in advance, avoiding stopping on the roadside, and parking only in designated areas, especially given the possibility of crowds at observation points. Whenever possible, it is recommended to enjoy the phenomenon from the municipality itself, avoiding unnecessary travel and promoting a more peaceful and safe observation.
