The Town Hall of Tomares has presented the poster for the XII Solidarity Popular Race 'City of Tomares', which will take place on October 25. The proceeds will go to the local association 'A Warrior named Darío', which promotes research into mitochondrial diseases.
The mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, unveiled the official poster for the XII Solidarity Popular Race 'City of Tomares' this Thursday, which will be held on Sunday, October 25. The event, organised by the Town Hall in collaboration with the Tomares Marathon Club, will once again have a strong charitable character: all proceeds will be donated to the local association 'A Warrior named Darío'.
A race with a cause: against mitochondrial diseases
The association was founded in Tomares around the story of Darío, an 8-year-old boy suffering from mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome type 9, associated with the SUCLG1 gene. This is an ultra-rare neurodegenerative genetic disease of which only about twenty cases are known worldwide, and just two in Spain.
The funds raised will be allocated to the research project Mitocure, led by scientists from the Pablo de Olavide University (UPO), focusing on the study of mitochondrial diseases. Additionally, the association provides support to families facing similar diagnoses, works to raise awareness of these conditions, and develops sensitisation actions.
“Turning sport into a tool to help those who need it most is the aim of this race,” said the organisers.
Registrations open until October 22
Those interested in participating can register through the website www.gesconchip.es until October 22. The event, which brings together hundreds of runners each year, has established itself as one of the most prominent sporting and charitable events on the Tomares calendar.
For the local residents, this race represents an opportunity to join efforts for a cause that hits close to home. Darío is a local boy, and the fact that the research is led from a university in Seville strengthens the local connection to the project.
The day of October 25 promises to be a celebration of sport and solidarity, with routes adapted for all ages and levels. The Town Hall encourages citizens to participate and contribute to the research of diseases that affect families worldwide, but which in Tomares have a name and a face of their own.
