The short film 'La Reconquista', directed by Bormujos' Ariadna Ruiz, has been selected for the official section of the VII Bogotá International Christian Film Festival, which will take place from August 25 to 30.
Bormujos will once again have a presence in the international festival circuit this summer thanks to cinema. The short film La Reconquista, directed by Bormujos filmmaker Ariadna Ruiz, has been selected for the official section of the VII Bogotá International Christian Film Festival (FICCBOG), which will be held from August 25 to 30 in the Colombian capital.
This is the first time the production has reached the American continent, having previously participated in competitions in Algeria and India, where it also received recognition. The selection in Bogotá marks a new milestone for this debut work, which continues to add miles to its world tour.
A Story of Encounters in Málaga in 1487
The short film, lasting about 20 minutes, is set in the year 1487, during the capture of Málaga. The plot follows a Christian knight who, lost, tries to reunite with the king's armies to prove his worth to the woman he loves. On his journey, he encounters a severely wounded Muslim soldier, and both must overcome their differences to face an unexpected situation.
As the director has explained, the work uses the historical context as a starting point to address universal themes such as trust, humanity, and the ability to understand one another even amidst conflict. The script is inspired by The Story of Abencerraje and the Beautiful Jarifa, an anonymous Moorish novel from the 16th century.
Cared-for Setting and Andalusian Soundtrack
One of the standout aspects of the production is the work on historical setting, with special attention to costumes and armour. The soundtrack includes an adaptation of Lamma Bada Yatathanna, a well-known Andalusian moaxaja reinterpreted by composer Fernando Salto Ruiz with the collaboration of a choir.
La Reconquista was produced in collaboration with SchoolTraining, the film school in Málaga where Ariadna Ruiz completed her Master's in Cinematography and Visual Arts. The project received support from the Málaga Film Office and the Málaga City Council during its production, and is distributed by Dreamview Distribution.
For the residents of Bormujos, the selection is a source of local pride. The director, born in the Aljarafe municipality, has been making a name for herself in the audiovisual sector with this first work, which has already travelled to several countries. The Colombian festival, now in its seventh edition, has established itself as a reference space for purpose-driven cinema, combining screenings with training and exchange activities among artists.
The event in Bogotá will take place from August 25 to 30, and the short film will compete in the official section alongside other international productions. For now, the director is already working on new projects, but this summer her focus will be on Colombia, where her debut work will continue to demonstrate that stories from Bormujos can cross any border.
