CSIF claims that 29 out of 36 agents of the Support and Reaction Group (GAR) of the Local Police of Seville have resigned. The City Council denies having any record of the resignations.

The Independent and Civil Servants Union (CSIF) has reported that 29 out of the 36 agents that make up the Support and Reaction Group (GAR) of the Local Police of Seville have resigned from continuing in the unit. This elite body, created just four months ago by Mayor José Luis Sanz, is in a critical situation according to the union.

Santiago Raposo, delegate of CSIF Local Police, pointed out that the origin of the conflict dates back to late 2025, when the Job Position Relationship (RPT) was modified to create the GAR. The municipal auditors raised initial objections, as they did not consider the unit viable as such, so it was decided to integrate it as a group dependent on another unit. All unions, except the majority one (Sppme), opposed this modification.

Problems with the schedule and overtime

One of the key points of discontent, according to CSIF, has been the work schedule. To compensate for the lack of an adequate assessment of job positions, overtime and a level 2 availability were established to cover unforeseen events. However, the union and other organizations rejected this system, arguing that “if the overtime was inflated and not justified, there would be problems in the long run.”

The schedule went ahead with the vote of the Sppme, but CSIF regrets that “it was only done so that the mayor could get a photo op.” Now, the municipal intervention has halted that schedule and has placed a suspensive objection on the extraordinary services carried out during Holy Week, which has resulted in GAR agents not being paid for those jobs. “And surely the same will happen with the Fair,” predicts Raposo.

Resignation of the inspector and lack of leadership

This situation is compounded by the resignation of the inspector in charge of the GAR a few weeks ago, which according to CSIF left the unit “defenceless.” “There are four officers and 30 police officers and the superintendent has gone on holiday, he is neither here nor expected,” claims Raposo. “Colleagues are completely demotivated, they are being used politically and for the past couple of weeks they have started to submit their resignations,” he adds.

The City Council of Seville offers a completely different version. Municipal sources claim that these resignations are not recorded and remind that GAR agents work on a service commission lasting one year, so such resignations are not possible. The only “exceptional” resignation was that of the inspector, who cited personal and health reasons.

For the residents of Seville, this crisis in the GAR represents uncertainty about the elite unit's response capacity in key events such as the April Fair. While the union and the City Council maintain opposing positions, the agents await a solution that guarantees their working conditions and the functioning of the group.
