The DGT reports three accidents on the AP-4, A-4 and A-49 causing queues of up to two kilometres. The first special summer operation anticipates 4.83 million journeys nationwide.
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has activated the first special summer operation and, just a few hours later, three accidents have complicated traffic on the main routes connecting Seville with Huelva and Cádiz. Around 2:00 PM this Friday, drivers intending to start their holidays encountered delays of up to two kilometres on the AP-4, A-4, and A-49.
Accident on the AP-4 near Las Cabezas de San Juan
On the AP-4, passing through Las Cabezas de San Juan and heading towards Jerez de la Frontera, an accident reported at kilometre point 38 has forced the left lane to be closed. According to DGT sources, the incident is causing around two kilometres of delays, affecting drivers heading towards the province of Cádiz. Emergency teams are working in the area to remove the vehicles involved and restore normalcy as soon as possible.
For residents of Las Cabezas de San Juan and the municipalities of Bajo Guadalquivir who use this motorway as access to the coast, the traffic jam is a setback at the start of the weekend. The DGT recommends checking traffic conditions before setting out and, where possible, seeking alternative routes via the N-IV.
Off-road accident on the A-4 near Dos Hermanas
Also in the province of Seville, the A-4 is experiencing complications around Dos Hermanas due to an off-road accident. The incident occurred at kilometre point 549 and has closed the right lane, causing around two kilometres of delays. Drivers heading towards Madrid or the southern part of the province have been caught off guard by the long queues during peak hours.
Dos Hermanas, the most populated municipality in the province after the capital, is often a hot spot during exit operations. Residents of the town and Utrera accessing the A-4 from the SE-3205 are the most affected. The DGT has deployed agents from the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard to expedite traffic and prevent further incidents.
Third incident on the A-49 in Huelva, also affecting Sevillians
The third incident affects the A-49, in the province of Huelva. An accident at Chucena, at kilometre point 33 and heading towards the capital of Huelva, is causing the left lane to be closed and more than two kilometres of delays. Although the incident occurred outside the province of Seville, it directly affects Sevillians heading to the beaches of Huelva or Portugal, as the A-49 is the main route from the capital of Seville to the west.
The DGT anticipates that during this weekend there will be 4.83 million journeys across Spain, and in Andalusia, the figure exceeds 23.4 million movements throughout the summer. The special operation in July is just the first of four: it will be followed by operations on August 1, August 15, and the return operation at the end of the month. Additionally, the DGT has announced an extraordinary device to manage mobility associated with the solar eclipse on August 12, a phenomenon that could attract many visitors to the region.
For drivers planning to travel this weekend, the DGT recommends avoiding peak hours, especially the early afternoon hours on Friday and Saturday mornings. It also advises checking the vehicle before setting out, bringing water and food, and using real-time navigation apps to avoid delays. In the event of being involved in an accident, the first step is to get to safety off the road and call 112.
The summer exit operation has started with more disruptions than desired, but the DGT is confident that once the incidents are resolved, traffic will normalise throughout the afternoon. However, last-minute traffic jams have reminded many drivers that, in summer, patience is the first luggage to carry.
