Drivers travelling on the AP-4 towards Cádiz will have nearly seven kilometres of hard shoulder available as an additional lane from August 1. The measure doubles the length of the pilot experience and will activate on weekends depending on traffic.
The AP-4 motorway, in its Seville section, will feature a dynamic hard shoulder of 6.72 kilometres for cars and motorcycles from August 1, according to the Government Subdelegation in Seville. The measure, coordinated by the General Directorate of Traffic and the Ministry of Transport, expands the pilot experience initiated a year ago with 3.38 kilometres and aims to improve traffic flow and road safety during weekends.
The new additional lane will be available in the direction of Cádiz, between the kilometre points 37+780 and 44+500, near the Las Cabezas de San Juan interchange. It will only be usable by cars and two and three-wheeled motorcycles, and its opening will depend on traffic conditions, indicated by variable information panels installed on the motorway.
The Subdelegation has highlighted that this action responds to the goal of increasing the capacity of the road during periods of high traffic intensity, especially during weekend travel. The measure will facilitate the merging of vehicles heading towards the A-471, destined for Lebrija, Trebujena, and Sanlúcar de Barrameda, in the province of Cádiz.
Additionally, the central government has announced the extension of truck traffic restrictions on the AP-4 during weekends in August. To the existing limitation on Saturdays, certain Friday afternoons will be added: July 31 and August 14 and 28, coinciding with special exit operations. The restriction for heavy vehicles will be in effect on Fridays between 16:00 and 20:00 and every Saturday in August between 10:00 and 13:00.
The Government Subdelegation in Seville has indicated that this temporary solution contributes to improving both safety and traffic flow during peak travel times. The expansion of the dynamic hard shoulder has been made possible after reinforcement works carried out on the road, which have allowed the length to be doubled.
For Seville drivers using the AP-4 to travel to the Cádiz coast, this measure provides relief from the usual summer weekend traffic jams. It is recommended to pay attention to the information panels and respect the indications, as the hard shoulder is only available when the signs indicate so.
The initiative is part of the actions by the General Directorate of Traffic to optimise the capacity of motorways during periods of high demand, without the need for major infrastructure works. The Subdelegation hopes that the measure will help reduce accidents and improve the travel experience for users.
