The Councillor for the Environment of Mairena del Alcor, Ana Guillén, has confirmed that the municipality has no positive cases or circulation of the West Nile virus, despite the alert in neighbouring towns in the province of Seville. The councillor has conveyed a message of reassurance to residents and detailed the control measures that remain active throughout the year.
“We have been prioritising the control of the Nile mosquito for five years. In Mairena, there are no positive cases or viral circulation in the routine inspections, but given the alert in neighbouring municipalities, we are intensifying information and prevention,” Guillén stated. The municipal delegation conducts biweekly and monthly controls through a specialised company that supervises potential breeding sites for the insect.
The comprehensive pest and larvicide control plan is reinforced in summer, with direct intervention in response to any reports from residents or entities. Additionally, the Town Hall disseminates weekly recommendations on social media and municipal channels to prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes.
The council insists that the effectiveness of the measures also depends on individual commitment, as the transmitting mosquitoes typically breed in private patios, gardens, and terraces. Therefore, it urges citizens to eliminate stagnant water, use repellents, and avoid the accumulation of containers outdoors.
The councillor emphasised that the municipal plan has been active for five years and that controls are intensified during the summer months when the mosquito population increases. Meanwhile, Mairena del Alcor remains vigilant regarding the evolution of the health alert in the Los Alcores region and the rest of the province.
