The Town Hall of Tomares intensifies its campaign against the heat with calls and visits to elderly people living alone. The Local Police and Social Welfare carry out special follow-ups during weather alert days.

The Town Hall of Tomares has launched its municipal campaign against the heat once again this year, but this summer the focus is on the most vulnerable neighbours. Through the Social Welfare department and the Local Police, the Council conducts periodic phone follow-ups —and occasionally in-person— for elderly individuals living alone or who are dependent. The aim: to check their health status, remind them of basic advice, and ensure they are following it.

Calls that save lives

The programme, which is especially intensified on weather alert days, is not limited to a mere courtesy call. According to municipal sources, social workers and Local Police officers verify that the elderly are hydrated, that their homes are cool, and that they are not showing symptoms of heatstroke. In case any issues are detected, emergency protocols are activated.

“We not only give them advice, but we also ask if they need anything: from going to the pharmacy to notifying a family member,” officials explain. The Local Police phone number (954153314) is available 24 hours a day for any unforeseen events.

Practical advice for the entire population

The campaign also includes a series of general recommendations that the Town Hall disseminates through its social media and official channels. Among them are drinking water frequently without waiting to feel thirsty, avoiding alcoholic or sugary drinks, and showering or wetting oneself to cool down. There is also an emphasis on reducing physical activity during the hottest hours of the day, protecting the skin with sunscreen, and wearing glasses with ultraviolet filters.

One of the pieces of advice that experts repeat the most: never leave people or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a moment. Temperatures inside a car can soar within minutes, even with the windows down.

A safer summer in Tomares

For the residents of Tomares, this campaign provides an extra sense of security. “Knowing that someone cares about you, that they call to see how you are, is a relief,” comments a 78-year-old neighbour who lives alone in the town centre. The Town Hall reminds that this initiative is not new, but that each year it is reinforced with more human resources and coordination between departments.

The campaign will remain active throughout the summer and will be strengthened during heat peaks that, according to the State Meteorological Agency, could arrive from the second half of July. Neighbours who want more information can check the Town Hall's social media or call the Local Police directly.
