Seville City Council has withdrawn from the Urban Planning Commission the item regarding the building license for the mosque on Victoria Domínguez Cerrato Street, in Polígono Sur. The decision comes after objections raised by Vox.

The Urban Planning councillor, Juan de la Rosa, confirmed this Friday the withdrawal of the item from the agenda of the executive commission of the Municipal Urban Planning Management. The aim is to "request the technical and legal reports that will allow us to assess, with the seriousness it deserves, the observations presented by Vox."

De la Rosa sought to downplay the measure: "Withdrawing an item from the agenda for further study is nothing new. It has been done before with other files and is a response to ensuring everything is done with all legal guarantees."

A project under scrutiny

The Mosque Foundation of Seville promotes this Islamic cultural centre in Polígono Sur, which includes a minaret. The mayor, José Luis Sanz, referred to the project this Thursday, following Vox's request to withdraw the item. "Ideologies are not above the law," Sanz stated, reminding that the promoters have followed the normal procedure.

Vox argues that the project describes as a requirement the "specific orientation required for the prayer room," which, in their view, makes the religious use primary rather than accessory, a point that is not included in the file.

Reactions from the foundation

The Mosque Foundation of Seville is convinced that the license will be granted. "By law and right, it must be granted; failing to do so would be an administrative anomaly," they state.

The Urban Planning commission meets every Tuesday and usually addresses between 100 and 120 items. De la Rosa has assured that "only when we have those reports on the table will we decide whether the matter is taken into consideration or not."

For the residents of Polígono Sur, the halt represents a new chapter in a project that has been in processing for nearly a year. The final decision could take several weeks, until the technical and legal reports are ready.
