The Town Council of Mairena del Alcor has sterilised nearly 80 community cats in the latest campaign of the CER programme. Almost half were females, which will reduce the expected litters for next autumn.

The Capture, Sterilisation and Return (CER) programme promoted by the Town Council of Mairena del Alcor has successfully sterilised nearly 80 community cats in its latest campaign. Of these, approximately half were females, a key figure to curb the growth of the feline population on the streets of the municipality.

The initiative, which is carried out with the collaboration of the coordinators and caretakers of the feline colonies, aims to ethically and sustainably control the presence of these animals. According to municipal sources, the sterilisation of females will significantly reduce the number of litters expected for next autumn.

Citizen collaboration and ordinance in progress

The Town Council has publicly thanked the involvement of the volunteers who care for the cats day by day. Without their work, the CER programme would not be viable, officials from the Council state. Citizen participation is essential to identify colonies and coordinate captures.

At the same time, the government team is working on modifying the Municipal Ordinance for the Management of Feline Colonies. The new regulations will include the regulation of fixed and non-fixed feeding points, with the aim of achieving a more organised and effective management.

Controlled feeding points

Although the ordinance has not yet been approved, some measures have already been implemented. All feeding points must be identified and coordinated within the municipal programme. Those that are not registered will be removed to avoid uncontrolled hotspots that compromise the effectiveness of the CER method.

The Town Council encourages residents interested in collaborating to do so in a coordinated manner. To this end, it is necessary to register in the municipal caregiver registry or contact the colony coordinators. In this way, they contribute to a responsible management of feline colonies and a better civic coexistence.

This measure represents another step in Mairena del Alcor's commitment to animal welfare and responsible ownership. Residents wishing to join can find information at municipal offices or through the Town Council's official channels.
