Pepe Barroso has met with irrigator communities and agricultural entities to discuss water management and the challenges facing the Lebrija countryside.

The Mayor of Lebrija, Pepe Barroso, has chaired a working meeting with the main actors in the local agricultural sector to address the scarcity of water resources threatening the countryside. The meeting, held this week, included representatives from the irrigator communities and entities such as Algosur, with the aim of outlining a joint roadmap.

Shared Concern for Water

During the meeting, attendees expressed their concern about the availability of water for irrigation, a determining factor for the local economy. Francisco Romero Cárdenas, president of the Irrigator Community of Sector BXII of the Lower Guadalquivir, highlighted the need to plan water resources in the medium and long term.

The mayor conveyed the commitment of the City Council to maintain ongoing dialogue with the sector and support initiatives that defend the interests of farmers. Among the key projects is the Balsa de Palmilla, an infrastructure considered an economic engine for Lebrija.

Coordinated Solutions for the Countryside

Participants agreed on the importance of working in a coordinated manner between administrations, entities, and organizations to tackle the challenges arising from water management. The sustainability of agricultural activity depends, according to experts, on actions that ensure supply.

The meeting also included the manager of the irrigator community, Diego Bellido, and representatives from the General Community of Users, such as Pepe Bellido. All of them supported the need to promote water infrastructures that allow for guaranteed responses to recurring droughts.

A Strategic Resource for the Region

Water has become a strategic resource for the economic and social development of Lebrija and the entire Lower Guadalquivir region. Attendees emphasized that the Lebrija countryside generates hundreds of direct and indirect jobs, so any improvement in water management impacts the entire population.

Mayor Pepe Barroso committed to elevating the conclusions of the meeting to other administrations, such as the Junta de Andalucía and the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation, to seek funding and technical support. The next follow-up meeting is scheduled for after the summer.

For the residents of Lebrija, the news represents a breath of hope amid climate uncertainty. Local agriculture, based on crops such as cotton, corn, or olives, requires a stable water supply to maintain competitiveness. In the meantime, farmers hope that the unity of the sector will help pressure administrations.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous commitment to continue working together. As a practical measure, the City Council will establish a direct communication channel with the irrigators to inform about updates regarding water resources.
