Six buses have departed from Tomares this Thursday with 300 residents loaded with coolers and beach umbrellas. This is the first outing of the municipal initiative that will be repeated every Thursday in July and August.

This Thursday, July 2, 300 residents of Tomares have set off for Punta Umbría in the first summer edition of ‘Thursdays at the Beach’. At nine in the morning, six municipal buses left from José Monge Cruz ‘Camarón de la Isla’ street heading to the Huelva coast.

The mayor of Tomares, José María Soriano, personally bid farewell to the first travellers, to whom the City Council gifted a commemorative towel. “This morning we said goodbye to the first residents who have set off for Punta Umbría in a new edition of ‘Thursdays at the Beach’. A programme that is already well established and eagerly awaited every summer, allowing thousands of Tomares residents to enjoy a day at the beach at an affordable price,” declared Soriano.

The initiative, organised by the Social Welfare department led by Magdalena Ybarra, has no limit on places. The City Council provides as many buses as necessary based on the tickets sold each week. Thus, no registered resident is left without their day at the beach.

Reduced prices and discounts for groups

The general ticket costs €5, but there are reduced rates: young people up to 35 years old and job seekers from the SAE pay €3.50, while retirees, pensioners, large families, seniors over 60, and people with disabilities (and their companion) pay only €2.50. To benefit from these discounts, proof of eligibility must be presented (ID, SAE card, disability certificate, large family title, or retirement document).

Tickets can be purchased from Monday to Wednesday, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, at the municipal building of Casas de Hermandad, located at Tomás Ybarra street, 14. It is mandatory to show ID both when purchasing and when boarding the bus.

A summer classic in Tomares

‘Thursdays at the Beach’ has become a summer classic in Tomares. Every Thursday in July and August, hundreds of seniors, families with children, and groups of young people take advantage of the opportunity to spend the day at the beach without having to drive. “It’s a relief for parents to know that their children are going by bus and not driving,” commented a resident at the departure. The service, which has been running for several editions, promotes community among residents and allows those without their own vehicle to enjoy the coast.

For Tomares residents, the date is marked on the calendar: every Thursday at 9:00 AM from Camarón de la Isla street, next to the Peña Cultural Flamenca. The return is scheduled for 7:30 PM, more than enough time to have a good swim, eat something, and take a nap under the umbrella. Anyone wanting to secure their spot knows: from Monday to Wednesday, go for the ticket. And if they run out, the City Council adds more buses. So, unless the weather prevents it, there’s no excuse not to take a dip.
