The municipal group Vox in Sevilla has requested the suspension of the urban project to build a mosque in Polígono Sur. They demand that the City Council explain the funding and processing of the plan.

The spokesperson for Vox in the Sevilla City Council, Gonzalo García de Polavieja, submitted a formal request on Tuesday for the halt of any initiative to construct a mosque in Polígono Sur. The party demands that community consensus be guaranteed before proceeding.

“We do not know if the PP government has surrendered to the fact that a culture that denigrates women is being installed normally in Sevilla,” García de Polavieja stated in a press release. The councillor has linked the project to a supposed tribute to Blas Infante, whom he refers to as “the convert”.

Priorities for the neighbourhood

The spokesperson reminded that Polígono Sur is one of the neighbourhoods with the greatest social, economic, and security needs in Spain. “It is common sense that priorities should focus on improving public services, reinforcing police presence, boosting employment, and rehabilitating housing,” he pointed out.

According to Vox, the construction of the mosque diverts resources that could be allocated to facilities for all the residents. The party argues that any urban action must be subject to maximum publicity and citizen participation.

Demands for transparency

García de Polavieja has urged the convening of an extraordinary plenary session of the Municipal Board of the Southern District. “We want to know the source of the funding and ensure that urban legality is strictly adhered to,” he stated.

The municipal group has announced that it will present initiatives to request all documentation related to the file. The spokesperson emphasised that Vox will continue to exercise oversight to ensure transparency in urban decisions.

The controversy arises at a time when the Sevilla City Council, governed by the PP, has not yet detailed the timelines or budget for the project. Municipal sources consulted claim that the plan is in the study phase and that there is no scheduled date for its execution.

Residents of Polígono Sur, for their part, have shown divided opinions. Some social groups have expressed their support for the initiative as a gesture of integration, while others demand more investment in basic services. The final decision will depend on the Urban Planning department, which will have to evaluate the claims presented.

Meanwhile, Vox has promised to maintain pressure. “We will defend as many initiatives as necessary for residents to know all the details and be able to express their opinion before any final decision,” concluded García de Polavieja.
