The municipal group of Vox demands that the Seville City Council suspend the construction of an Islamic cultural centre with a mosque in Polígono Sur until community participation and transparency of the file are guaranteed.

The Municipal Group of Vox in the Seville City Council has requested the PP government team to halt the urban project that plans to build an Islamic cultural centre with a mosque in Polígono Sur, next to the Tres Mil Viviendas. The party believes that the initiative should be stopped until there is consensus among the neighbours and all administrative and financial details are clarified.

Vox spokesperson Gonzalo García de Polavieja has asked the City Council to publicly inform about the content of the project, the procedure followed, the source of funding, and the criteria that have motivated its promotion. He pointed out that any urban action of this nature must be developed with sufficient publicity and have participation mechanisms so that residents can know the project and express their opinion before a final decision is made.

An extraordinary plenary session to discuss the mosque

Vox has proposed calling an extraordinary plenary session of the Southern District Municipal Board to address this initiative and facilitate debate between the administrations and the affected neighbours. The party understands that Polígono Sur remains one of the neighbourhoods with the greatest social, economic, and security difficulties, so administrations should focus their efforts on improving public services, strengthening security, promoting employment, rehabilitating housing, and boosting new facilities for the entire population.

García de Polavieja has criticized the position of the municipal government of the PP regarding the project and questioned what he considers a normalisation of a culture that, in his opinion, "denigrates women." In that context, he also referred to the tribute recently held for Blas Infante.

Control of the urban file

The Vox spokesperson announced that his group will promote the necessary initiatives to access all documentation related to the file, understand the source of funding, and verify that the project complies with current urban regulations. The party claims it will continue to exercise oversight over the urban decisions of the City Council.

For the residents of Polígono Sur, the possible construction of this mosque represents a new uncertainty about the future of a neighbourhood that has suffered decades of neglect. While some see the cultural centre as an opportunity for integration, others fear that the project does not address the most urgent needs of the area, such as improving security, employment, or housing rehabilitation. The debate is on, and for now, the City Council has not officially commented on Vox's request.

Next week, the requested extraordinary plenary session could be held, where the PP government team is expected to clarify its position and provide details about the project. In the meantime, the residents of Polígono Sur will remain attentive to a decision that will mark the urban and social future of their neighbourhood.
