The City Council of Seville has carried out 4,184 plant health interventions since last summer across all districts. The campaign has included treatments against the red palm weevil, the pine processionary caterpillar, and the elm leaf beetle.
The City Council of Seville has completed an ambitious plant health campaign that has involved 4,184 interventions in the eleven districts of the city since last summer. The initiative, executed by the Department of Trees, Parks, and Gardens, aimed primarily to ensure the good phytosanitary condition of the trees and to control the pests threatening urban green areas.
The campaign has addressed well-known pests such as the red palm weevil, the pine processionary caterpillar, the elm leaf beetle, and scale insects. Nests of parakeets have also been removed, and preventive and corrective treatments have been applied. The East District – Alcosa - Torreblanca has recorded the most interventions, with 2,041 actions.
Endotherapy and mechanical removal: the most used techniques
In the East District, 873 mechanical removals of processionary caterpillar nests have been carried out, 623 endotherapy treatments against the elm leaf beetle, and 220 more for the processionary caterpillar. Additionally, more than 230 actions related to the red palm weevil have been counted. Endotherapy, which involves injecting treatment directly into the trunk, minimizes environmental impact and prevents the spread of chemical products.
In the Triana District, 386 actions have been executed, focusing on the red palm weevil, elm leaf beetle, and processionary caterpillar. In the North District, with 473 interventions, the removal of 383 processionary caterpillar nests and 89 preventive endotherapy treatments stand out. Meanwhile, the Cerro - Amate District has added 302 actions, focused on the elm leaf beetle and red palm weevil.
Actions in the rest of the districts
The Palmera - Bellavista District has recorded 228 treatments, including specific actions against scale insects. In San Pablo - Santa Justa, 204 interventions have been carried out; in Nervión, 177; and in the Old Town, 156, which include treatments against the red palm weevil, the processionary caterpillar, and the removal of parakeet nests. In the South District, 99 actions have been carried out; in Macarena, 66; and in Los Remedios, 52.
The delegate for Parks and Gardens, Evelia Rincón, has emphasized that plant health is a less visible but fundamental task. "A healthy tree is a safer tree, more resilient and capable of providing greater environmental benefits to the city," she noted. Rincón added that the municipal government is committed to technical and preventive management, acting before problems worsen.
For the residents of Seville, these actions translate into healthier and safer trees, with less risk of falling branches or the proliferation of pests that could affect private gardens. The campaign will continue in the coming months, with special attention to the most vulnerable species.
