García is the most common surname in the three municipalities, but the lists hide curious differences. Utrera records the highest concentration of García in the province, with 76 out of every thousand inhabitants.
The Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA) has published data on the most frequent surnames in three key municipalities of the province: Dos Hermanas, Mairena del Aljarafe and Utrera. In all three, the surname García occupies the top spot without dispute, but the rest of the podium varies significantly. In Dos Hermanas, Rodríguez (56.76 per thousand) and Sánchez (45.72) follow the leader; in Mairena, Rodríguez (48.38) and González (43.35) take over; and in Utrera, Rodríguez (58.44) and Fernández (55.14) complete the podium.
Dos Hermanas: the stronghold of García, Rodríguez and Sánchez
In Dos Hermanas, the surname García reaches a rate of 67.13 per thousand inhabitants. It is followed by Rodríguez (56.76) and Sánchez (45.72). The fourth place goes to López (41.18), followed by González (40.36) and Fernández (38.95). Closing the top 10 are Pérez (35.01), Gómez (33.40), Jiménez (33.13) and Martín (27.52).
The Nazarene list reflects the onomastic tradition of the southern peninsula, with widely spread patronymic surnames. The locals can feel proud to carry a surname that, according to the data, is the most repeated in the province.
Mairena del Aljarafe: González and Moreno break into the ranking
In Mairena del Aljarafe, the surname García also leads, with 59.93 per thousand inhabitants. However, the list changes here: Rodríguez (48.38) is second, González (43.35) third and Fernández (41.30) fourth. Sánchez (38.55) and Pérez (37.73) occupy the fifth and sixth places, while López (35.09) is seventh. The newcomer is Moreno (26.21), which enters in eighth position, followed by Martínez (26.16) and Gómez (25.79).
The presence of Moreno in the Mairena top 10 is a nod to Andalusian idiosyncrasy. The locals of Aljarafe can boast of having a well-established surname that does not appear in the lists of the other two municipalities.
Utrera: García dominates and Romero and Ruiz appear
Utrera is the municipality where the surname García hits hardest: 76.07 per thousand inhabitants, the highest rate of the three. It is followed by Rodríguez (58.44) and Fernández (55.14). González (54.82) and Pérez (45.92) complete the top five. The Utrera list stands out with the inclusion of Romero and Ruiz, surnames deeply rooted in local history and the geography of the Sevillian countryside.
Utrerans can feel proud of their onomastic heritage, which reflects centuries of history. The IECA reminds us that this data is a current snapshot of surname distribution, based on the municipal register.
"Surnames are a reflection of the history and migration of populations," sources from the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia state.
For the residents of these municipalities, knowing the most common surnames can be a curious exercise in local identity. Who knows if theirs is on the list? What is clear is that, in Dos Hermanas, Mairena and Utrera, being called García is almost a classic.
