The shout of goal from the Spanish national team in the World Cup quarter-finals coincided with the passage of the patron San Benito Abad along Obispo Navarro Street, generating an unusual image that is already viral.

Friday night in Lebrija was anything but calm. While the procession of San Benito Abad made its way down Obispo Navarro Street to the sounds of the Agrupación Musical Las Polillas from Cádiz, a loud cheer from the Cervecería Birra Mía broke the solemnity. Inside, dozens of fans were celebrating the goal by Mikel Merino that secured Spain's place in the World Cup semi-finals against Belgium. The scene, recorded and shared on social media, shows how football fervour and religious devotion merged for a few seconds.

The coincidence that stopped the street

The locals following the procession turned around upon hearing the cheers. The bar was just a few metres from the procession, and the explosion of joy was impossible to ignore. Some members of the brotherhood smiled, others looked on in surprise, but the band did not lose its rhythm. The procession continued on its way while, on the other side of the glass, the fans embraced and jumped.

“It was a very special moment, a mix of devotion and passion for football,” commented a local who witnessed the scene. The video has already amassed thousands of views on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and comments highlight the naturalness with which both events coexisted. Lebrija, a town of nearly 28,000 inhabitants, experienced a night to remember.

The San Benito procession, a century-old tradition

San Benito Abad is the patron of Lebrija, and his procession is one of the most significant events on the local calendar. Each year, the image travels through the historic streets accompanied by hundreds of faithful. The Agrupación Musical Las Polillas from Cádiz provided the soundtrack, but Merino's goal slipped into the score.

“You don’t see the saint and the national team sharing the spotlight every day,” joked a local bar owner. The Cervecería Birra Mía has become the epicentre of the anecdote, and its owners claim they would repeat the experience. “The atmosphere was incredible, and when the goal came, it was impossible to contain the emotion,” recounted a waiter.

A match that united all of Spain

The match between Spain and Belgium, part of the World Cup quarter-finals, kept the entire country on edge. Mikel Merino's goal in extra time unleashed madness in bars and homes. In Lebrija, the celebration had an unexpected stage, but was equally vibrant. The qualification for the semi-finals was celebrated intensely, and the San Benito procession became an exceptional witness.

For the locals, the image sums up the character of the town: capable of combining tradition and modernity without losing its essence. “This is Lebrija, where the sacred and the profane shake hands,” commented a brotherhood member with laughter. Friday night will be etched in collective memory, and the video will continue to circulate around the world.
