Seville City Council will place a first section of the new awning system on Avenida de la Constitución once the Junta de Andalucía authorises the project. The trial will serve to verify its functionality and aesthetic integration before completing the system.

Seville City Council has announced that it will install a first section of the new awning system on Avenida de la Constitución as soon as the Junta de Andalucía gives the green light to the project. This was detailed on Tuesday by the Urban Planning delegate, Juan de la Rosa, who explained that this pilot test will allow verification of both the functionality and the aesthetic integration of the design in the monumental environment.

Two proposals on the table

The Heritage Commission of the Junta is currently evaluating two proposals submitted by the City Council for the awning of this emblematic avenue. It will be the autonomous body that determines which of them is the most suitable for such a sensitive space, flanked by the Cathedral and the Archive of the Indies.

Once the Junta approves one of the designs, the installation of that first section will proceed. As De la Rosa specified, if the outcome of the test is satisfactory, the rest of the sections will be manufactured to complete the entire new awning.

“As this is a definitive system, if the result of this test is satisfactory, the rest of the sections will be manufactured to complete the entire new awning,” the delegate stated.

An essential prior procedure

Before tendering the new contract, the City Council must resolve the previous contract linked to the prior awning design. De la Rosa emphasised that this is a “necessary procedure” to be able to tender the works for the new system. This administrative process is underway and is expected to conclude in the coming weeks.

The acting Minister of Culture and Sport, Patricia del Pozo, already warned on June 16 that the project was registered by the City Council on June 1, and that the Junta would work “as quickly as possible,” but needed time to study it with the attention it requires.

“We cannot act with a speed that does not allow us to study a project that requires all our attention,” Del Pozo stated at that time.

A relief for pedestrians and merchants

The installation of the awnings is a long-standing demand from local residents and merchants, who suffer from high temperatures every summer on an avenue with hardly any shade. With the arrival of the heat, the demand has intensified, and the City Council is looking to expedite the timelines so that this summer pedestrians can enjoy a cooler stroll.

Avenida de la Constitución is one of the main tourist and commercial arteries of the city, and its awning will not only improve comfort but could also encourage spending in local establishments. Merchants hope that, once the procedures are completed, the awnings will be ready before the end of summer.

Next steps

The City Council is confident that the Junta will resolve the authorisation soon. Once the design is approved, the installation of the first section will be quick and will serve as a test. If all goes well, the rest of the awnings will be manufactured and installed progressively. In the meantime, locals and tourists will have to arm themselves with patience and, if possible, a good fan.
