The Teatro Lope de Vega reopens in September after a €9.5 million renovation. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, José María Pou and Lolita Flores lead a programme of nearly 20 shows until December.

The Teatro Lope de Vega in Seville will raise its curtain again next September, coinciding with the Bienal de Flamenco. The mayor, José Luis Sanz, and the delegate for Tourism and Culture, Angie Moreno, have presented an autumn programme featuring great names from the national scene such as Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, José María Pou, Carlos Hipólito and Lolita Flores. Under the slogan 'Lope Returns', the season includes nearly twenty performances of theatre, dance, music and flamenco, with both national and international productions and a prominent space for Seville's companies.

Tickets will go on sale on Monday, July 13 at 9:00 am through the theatre's official website, as announced by the City Council. The mayor has emphasised that the Lope de Vega is one of the city's "great cultural symbols" and highlighted the comprehensive renovation carried out with an investment exceeding €9.5 million. A project that, according to the municipal government, returns to Seville a modern, safe space ready for current challenges.

A Season with Big Names and Seville Debut

Autumn at the Lope de Vega will kick off with Ad Mariam, a concert that inaugurates the III Ruta Turina and features the participation of Soraya Méncid, Alicia Naranjo, Sergio Escobar, Cristina Lucio-Villegas and La Orquestina, under the direction of Rafael Ruibérriz de Torres. This will be the starting gun for a programme that promises strong emotions.

Carlos Hipólito stars in A Long Day's Journey into Night from October 16 to 18, a play by Eugene O'Neill directed by Ernesto Caballero. At the end of the month, José María Pou will close October with Giant (October 31 and November 1), a co-production of the Teatre Romea and the Grec Festival of Barcelona directed by Josep María Mestres. In November, Cecilia Freijeiro will portray Marcela, a character inspired by Cervantes, in a production directed by Leticia Dolera (November 6).

One of the highlights will be the debut of Lolita Flores in Seville with Poncia, a monologue directed by Luis Luque based on The House of Bernarda Alba (November 7 and 8). The year’s theatrical season will conclude in December with Malquerida, a rural drama by Jacinto Benavente starring Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and directed by Natalia Menéndez (December 5 to 7).

Comprehensive Renovation and Transformed Urban Environment

The renovations in the theatre have included updates to sound and lighting systems, digitalisation of equipment, changes to carpentry, installation of a fire curtain, and restoration of the seating area, boxes and balcony. But the transformation is not limited to the interior. Outside, an open-air auditorium is being created, planting over a hundred trees and improving pedestrian accessibility in the area of the theatre and the Casino de la Exposición. These exterior works will continue until 2027, so residents in central Seville will need to be patient with scaffolding and construction over the coming months. In return, when everything is ready, they will find a completely renovated Lope de Vega and a much more pleasant urban environment.

The local scene has a significant presence in this season. The dance and flamenco show Fractus, by Manuela Nogales and Fernando Romero (October 23), and Worth an Empire by dancer Paula Comitre, scheduled for International Flamenco Day (November 16), are two Seville proposals that promise to impress. Additionally, companies such as the Teatro Clásico de Sevilla and Atalaya return with productions of Lorca and Valle-Inclán: The Public, directed by Alfonso Zurro, from November 20 to 22, and Divine Words, directed by Ricardo Iniesta, from December 11 to 13. The theatre also previews its first performance of 2027 with Six Characters in Search of an Author, by Luigi Pirandello, directed by Pepa Gamboa and Antonio Álamo, from January 8 to 10.

"The Lope de Vega is one of the great cultural symbols of Seville. With this renovation, we return to the city a modern, safe space ready for current challenges," said Mayor José Luis Sanz during the presentation.

Music, Jazz and Christmas at the Lope

Music will have a prominent place with two fado voices, Sara Correia and Beatriz Felício, performing on October 24 and 25 respectively. The Seville Festival will feature the screening of Another Round (November 11) and a concert by the Municipal Symphonic Band of Seville (November 14). For jazz lovers, pianist Marco Mezquida presents his trio Tornado (November 28), while Andalucía Big Band and Antonio Lizana mix flamenco and jazz the following day, November 29.

The Seville Christmas will have its space at the Lope de Vega with the concert of Siempre Así, which will bring its repertoire of rumba and flamenco on December 19. Three institutional events will also be part of the festive calendar: the proclamation of the Three Kings Parade and the concert of the Municipal Band of Seville on December 17 and 18, and the concert In Memoriam by the Jiménez Becerril Foundation on December 20. A varied programme that, like the theatre itself, promises to once again be the cultural heart of the city.
