The Civil Guard has arrested the leader of an organization that recruited irregular immigrants, cramped them in a warehouse, and charged them for sleeping, while defrauding agricultural owners in Seville and Huelva.

The head of the network, which operated from El Real de la Jara, was arrested by the Civil Guard as part of operation BAETIS CISTUS. Alongside him, three other individuals have been investigated as necessary collaborators in supervising and transporting the workers.

Recruitment of Victims in Irregular Situations

According to the investigations, the arrested individual recruited undocumented foreign individuals taking advantage of their economic needs. The victims were transported to an industrial warehouse in El Real de la Jara, where up to 18 people were crammed in unsanitary conditions, without bathrooms or showers.

The workers, mostly of sub-Saharan origin, were verbally contracted for agricultural tasks. In the initial days, the employer paid them to gain their trust, but then stopped paying their wages and began charging them for overnight stays and transportation to the fields, creating a growing debt.

“When they demanded what was owed, the arrested individual responded with death threats via text messages, brandishing knives and intimidating them with dangerous dogs,” sources from the investigation stated.

Fraud Against Agricultural Owners in Seville and Huelva

Simultaneously, the Civil Guard confirmed that the same individual offered local farmers the collection of their crops in exchange for supposed benefits. Once the product was obtained, he sold it directly at oil mills in Badajoz and Huelva, charging high amounts that were never delivered to the landowners.

The economic damages, according to the armed institute, are significant, both due to the misappropriation of agricultural materials and the fraud against the owners. The operation is part of preventive services against crimes in the agricultural and labour sectors in the province of Seville.

A Structural Problem in the Seville Countryside

This case highlights a recurring blight in the agricultural sector of the province: the exploitation of irregular seasonal workers. Organizations like Sevilla Acoge have been denouncing these practices for years, which worsen during campaigns such as olive or strawberry harvesting. The lack of effective controls and job insecurity facilitate the operation of networks like this with impunity.

For the Seville farmer, this fraud represents a double blow: they lose the harvest and also see their work exploited by unscrupulous intermediaries. The Civil Guard advises owners to always hire through official channels and to be wary of offers that seem too advantageous.

The arrested individual has been placed at the disposal of the judicial system and is charged with crimes of human trafficking, labour exploitation, continued fraud, threats, and misappropriation. The investigation remains open to locate possible additional victims and determine the full extent of the network.
