The first deputy mayor of Osuna, Brígida Pachón, took her seat in the Congress of Deputies on Thursday as the replacement for María Jesús Montero, who has moved to the Andalusian Parliament.
Brígida Pachón (PSOE) began her journey as a national deputy on Thursday by swearing the Constitution in Congress, in a ceremony presided over by Francina Armengol. The socialist from Seville, who was previously the first deputy mayor of Osuna, will occupy the seat left vacant by María Jesús Montero, who resigned last week to join the Andalusian Parliament.
Pachón, who holds a degree in Social Work from Pablo de Olavide University, will balance her parliamentary duties with her existing municipal responsibilities in the Osuna City Council: the areas of Presidency and Finance. Additionally, she has served as the secretary of Equality for the local PSOE executive in Osuna and as a member of the provincial executive of the PSOE in Seville.
The swearing-in took place at the beginning of the plenary session on Thursday, when Pachón swore to "uphold the Constitution" before the president of the Chamber. The PSOE of Seville celebrated the arrival of the new deputy on social media, highlighting that her "tireless work will ensure that the province has an ally in the Cortes."
The transition comes after María Jesús Montero's departure, who last Friday, June 5, submitted her resignation for the seat she obtained in the 2023 general elections by heading the socialist candidacy for Seville. Montero has been accredited as a regional deputy in the Andalusian Parliament, where she will exercise a "serious and demanding" opposition to the government of Juanma Moreno. This move is reminiscent of that made in 2021 by the then Minister of Finance, who alternated between Congress and regional responsibilities, although on that occasion it was to assume the spokesperson role for the PSOE in the lower house.
With Pachón's arrival, the Socialist Group in Congress regains a key seat for the province of Seville. The new deputy has stated that she will focus her work on social policies and defending the interests of the municipalities in Seville, particularly in terms of local financing and employment.
Pachón's next steps include her integration into parliamentary committees, likely in those of Social Policy and Employment, areas related to her training in Social Work. The Plenary of Congress has accepted her accreditation, so from this Thursday she is part of the Chamber with full rights.
