Pope Francis has granted a Jubilee Year to the San Juan Bautista Parish in Las Cabezas de San Juan, starting June 24, 2026, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its church. The archbishop of Seville will preside over the opening mass.
The San Juan Bautista Parish in Las Cabezas de San Juan received a special designation from the Vatican: a full Jubilee Year running from June 24, 2026 to June 24, 2027. This honor marks the 250th anniversary of the church building, making it a focal point for pilgrims and the local community.
Pope Francis’s decree allows the faithful to obtain plenary indulgences under the usual conditions during visits to the parish church. The Jubilee year is a rare privilege for a rural parish and underscores the historical and spiritual significance of the temple, which has served as the central religious landmark in the town for two and a half centuries.
Archbishop José Ángel Saiz Meneses of Seville will celebrate the opening Mass on June 24 at 8 p.m., the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The date was chosen both for its liturgical significance and to link directly with the church’s dedication. The Mass will also include a ritual opening of the Holy Door, a tradition in jubilee years that symbolises the path to salvation.
Parish priest Marco Antonio Fernández expressed deep gratitude for the concession. “Receiving this grace is an immense honor for our community. We want the Jubilee Year to be a time of renewal of faith, of encounter with God, and of reconnecting with our roots. Celebrating 250 years of the parish’s history invites us to look to the past with gratitude and to the future with hope,” he said in a statement. He also praised the support of the Archdiocese of Seville, noting that without their pastoral accompaniment and administrative help, the request would not have succeeded.
The parish has prepared a full calendar of events that blend religious, cultural, and heritage activities. These include daily liturgies, guided tours of the church, documentary exhibitions, and conferences. The goal is to strengthen community bonds and highlight the architectural and spiritual richness of the building, which is considered the most important landmark in Las Cabezas de San Juan.
Historically, the church of San Juan Bautista was completed in 1776 during the reign of Charles III. Its Baroque-style façade and elaborate altarpieces have attracted art historians and visitors alike. The Jubilee Year is expected to boost religious tourism in the Marismas del Guadalquivir region, with special events planned for each major feast day.
For those who cannot attend in person, the parish will stream key liturgies and offer virtual blessings. Pilgrims from other dioceses are welcome, and nearby parishes are cooperating to provide accommodation and information. The Jubilee will conclude on June 24, 2027, with a closing ceremony presided over by the archbishop.
