The man arrested for the murder of his partner in Mairena del Aljarafe remains hospitalized under police guard. The attack occurred on Friday, and authorities await his medical clearance for formal detention.

The investigation into the death of a woman in the Seville suburb of Mairena del Aljarafe continues as the primary suspect remains under police custody in a hospital. The 46-year-old man is being treated for self-inflicted injuries sustained after the alleged attack, and formal charges are pending his discharge.

The incident took place on the evening of Friday, June 26, at a home on Calle San Isidro Labrador in the Los Alcones neighborhood. Police responding to an emergency call found the woman with multiple stab wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was discovered with injuries consistent with self-harm and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under guard.

The Guardia Civil is leading the investigation, which is being treated as a possible case of gender-based violence. If confirmed, it would mark the sixth such killing in Andalusia this year and the 25th in Spain, according to data from the Ministry of Equality. Since 2003, at least 1,366 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners in the country.

Local authorities have urged restraint. The Mairena del Aljarafe city council has called an extraordinary session for Monday morning to decide on official mourning and other measures. Mayor María del Mar Romero said in a statement, 'We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. We ask for respect for the family and for the judicial process.'

The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of relatives. Neighbors described the couple as quiet and reported no previous disturbances. Violence against women remains a persistent issue in Spain, with the government recently reinforcing prevention campaigns.

The suspect is expected to be formally arrested once medically fit. He has not yet been questioned by investigators. The weapon used in the attack, a kitchen knife, has been recovered for forensic analysis.

This case has reignited calls for stronger protective measures. Women's rights groups have scheduled a protest outside the city hall on Tuesday. For now, the community mourns, and the investigation proceeds.
