The suspect, 44, seriously injured himself after the attack and is guarded by police at the hospital. Their 13-year-old son alerted neighbors, leading to the discovery.
A 44-year-old man is under police custody in a Seville hospital after he allegedly stabbed his partner to death in their home in Mairena del Aljarafe early Saturday morning. The suspect, who inflicted severe self-injuries with a bladed weapon, remains under guard by the Guardia Civil, which is leading the investigation.
The victim, also 44 and identified only as Ana, was found dead by officers who responded to the scene after their 13-year-old son ran into the street around 1:30 a.m. shouting that his father was stabbing his mother. According to sources close to the case, the boy's cries alerted neighbors, who called the authorities.
When Guardia Civil agents arrived, the woman was already dead, and the man was gravely wounded from self-inflicted stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he remains under police custody. The couple's son is now in the care of social services and relatives.
The mayor of Mairena del Aljarafe, Antonio Conde, has called an extraordinary meeting of party spokespersons for Sunday to discuss institutional measures in response to the killing. In a message on social media, Conde urged caution and respect for the investigation: “In these moments we must continue to act with maximum prudence, respect for the investigation, and institutional unity.”
The Guardia Civil is treating the case as a suspected gender-violence homicide. The subdelegate of the Spanish government in Seville, Francisco Toscano, confirmed that the main line of inquiry is gender violence. No prior complaints of abuse had been filed against the suspect, according to sources.
Neighbors described the family as foreigners who had recently moved into the area. They expressed shock at the violence, noting that the couple had seemed quiet and kept to themselves.
If confirmed as a femicide, Ana would be the sixth victim of gender violence in Andalusia this year and the 25th in Spain, according to official data. The figures highlight the persistent problem of intimate partner violence across the country, despite ongoing prevention efforts.
In response to such incidents, authorities urge anyone experiencing or witnessing abuse to contact the 016 helpline, which operates 24/7, or the email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es. The WhatsApp line 600 000 016 is also available. In emergencies, they advise calling 112, the National Police (091), or the Guardia Civil (062). The ALERTCOPS mobile application can also send a geolocated alert to police without a phone call.
The investigation continues as the Guardia Civil gathers evidence from the scene and interviews witnesses. The suspect’s condition remains serious, but he has not yet been formally questioned. The court will decide on his detention once he is discharged from hospital.
Gender violence has been a major societal concern in Spain, with the government and regional authorities repeatedly reinforcing resources for victims and awareness campaigns. The tragedy in Mairena del Aljarafe has shaken the local community, which is now mourning the loss of a neighbor and supporting the orphaned teenager.
Local council members are expected to issue a joint statement condemning the violence and expressing solidarity with the victim’s family. The mayor has also expressed condolences and called for unity in the fight against gender-based violence.
