Seville City Council has completed the restoration of the Olympic Roundabout cauldron, returning it to the colours of Expo 92. This piece is the only one in the world where the Olympic flame was reignited after the Olympic Games.

The Urban Planning Department of Seville City Council has announced the completion of the restoration of the Olympic Roundabout cauldron, a symbol of Expo 92 that has regained its original splendour. The intervention has reinforced the structure and restored the chromatic tone it displayed during the Universal Exposition, according to municipal sources.

A witness to Olympic and exhibition history

The cauldron is not just any decorative element. During Expo 92, it was installed in the Pavilion of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), also known as the Olympic Pavilion. Its true uniqueness lies in the fact that it is the only place on the planet where the Olympic flame was reignited after the closure of an Olympic Games, a fact that gives it exceptional symbolic value.

In 2000, in connection with Seville's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games, the cauldron was moved to its current location, the Olympic Roundabout, in front of the Cartuja site. The roundabout was inaugurated on August 2 of that same year and has since become a landmark in the Isla de la Cartuja, frequently visited by locals and tourists alike.

The legacy of Expo 92, more alive than ever

More than three decades after that exhibition that transformed the city, the cauldron remains one of the most representative testimonies of that event. The restoration is part of the municipal policy to conserve and enhance the contemporary urban heritage of Seville, with special attention to the elements that constitute the material legacy of Expo 92.

For the people of Seville, this cauldron is not just a historical piece: it is part of the collective memory of several generations who experienced that exhibition which projected the image of Seville worldwide. The intervention by the Urban Planning Department ensures that this symbol remains in perfect condition for future generations.

A recovered space for public enjoyment

The Olympic Roundabout, located on the avenue of Expo 92, is a must-pass location for those traversing the Isla de la Cartuja. With the restoration, the cauldron shines as it did on its first day, returning visual appeal to this corner of the city that may have diminished over the years. Local residents can once again enjoy a unique piece that exemplifies the diversity and richness of the exhibition heritage left by that international event.

The work, which included structural consolidation and chromatic restoration, is part of municipal initiatives to preserve the city's unique elements. This is not the first time the City Council has intervened in elements from Expo 92, but it is one of the most symbolic, given the exceptional nature of the cauldron.

With this restoration, Seville not only preserves a piece of its recent history but also reaffirms its connection to the Olympic movement and to that exhibition which marked a turning point in the urban and cultural modernisation of the Andalusian capital. Those who pass by the Olympic Roundabout from now on will encounter a cauldron that, like the flame that inspired it, continues to shine brightly.
