Seville City Council has completed the restoration of the Cauldron of the Olympic Roundabout, a unique piece that burned after the Olympic Games. The intervention has reinforced its structure and restored its original colour.

The Urban Planning Department of Seville City Council has announced the completion of the restoration of the Cauldron of the Olympic Roundabout, a symbol of Expo 92 that shines once again like the first day. The works included structural reinforcement and the recovery of its chromatic surface, according to municipal sources.

A legacy of Expo 92 that shines again

The cauldron occupied a prominent place in the Pavilion of the International Olympic Committee during the Universal Exposition of 1992. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it was the only place in the world where an Olympic flame was lit again after the Games had concluded, giving it exceptional symbolic value.

In 2000, coinciding with the creation of the Olympic Roundabout, in front of the Cartuja site, the cauldron was moved to its current location as part of the Sevilla 2008 bid. The roundabout was inaugurated on August 2 of that year and has since become one of the busiest spaces on the Island of Cartuja.

More than three decades of collective memory

The intervention is part of the municipal strategy for the conservation of Seville's contemporary urban heritage, with special attention to the elements of Expo 92 that are part of the memory of several generations of Sevillians. More than three decades later, the cauldron remains one of the most representative testimonies of that event that transformed the city.

For the people of Seville, this restoration represents the recovery of an icon that many remember from their childhood or youth. The piece, located in a very busy roundabout, is a point of reference for those passing through the area and an attraction for tourists visiting the Cartuja.

Guarantee of preservation for the future

With this action, the Urban Planning Department ensures the preservation of one of the most popular pieces from Expo 92. The cauldron is an example of the diversity of the exhibition heritage left by that international event, and its restoration contributes to keeping its legacy alive.

The works have restored the image it displayed during the Universal Exposition, with vibrant colours and a solid structure. The people of Seville and visitors can once again enjoy this emblem that, from its roundabout, recalls the Olympic spirit and the modernisation that the Andalusian capital experienced.

The restoration of the Olympic Cauldron is an example of how the city cares for its contemporary heritage. Anyone passing through the Olympic Roundabout will see that the cauldron looks impeccable, ready to continue witnessing the passage of time and the history of Seville.
