The Alcalá de Guadaíra Museum begins the 2026-2027 academic year with the expansion of its headquarters, which will double the exhibition area, and a programme commemorating the 50th anniversary of the painter Ressendi's death.
The Alcalá de Guadaíra Museum is starting a new season marked by two major milestones: the commencement of expansion and modernisation works on the building and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of the painter Ressendi, scheduled for 2027. This was presented by the delegate for Heritage, Culture and Museums, Christopher Rivas, who outlined a programme that combines exhibitions, competitions, and heritage cycles.
The work on the headquarters, which has been in operation for two decades, will allow the current area to be doubled to exceed 1,000 square metres of exhibition space. To achieve this, the adjacent hall will be rehabilitated and joined with the main building, improving accessibility, storage, and visibility. The works will begin this autumn and will not interfere with the museum's usual activities.
The project includes new access points from Plaza de La Almazara and the creation of a new Plaza del Museo, resulting from the comprehensive renovation of Parque Centro. This intervention will lower the entrance to the same level as La Almazara, making the building visible from the urban centre.
On the exhibition front, the season kicks off with the Ciclo de Autores Alcalareños dedicated to Antonio Cerero, followed by 'The Landscape in Ramón Gaya's Travels'. There will also be displays of 'New Additions to the Municipal Collections' and works from the LIV International Landscape Painting Competition.
The most special event will arrive between March and May 2027 with the exhibition 'Ressendi. 50 Years Later', dedicated to the painter due to his connection with Alcalá. The delegate emphasised the collaboration with the artist's family, especially with his daughter, Paloma Voselle, and with private owners who have loaned works to the museum, providing an opportunity to bring his legacy closer to the region and project the institution in the regional and national cultural sphere.
Among the cultural cycles, 'Walking through Alcalá' stands out, celebrating its 25th anniversary this autumn with free guided tours of the monumental, natural, historical, and traditional heritage of the locality.
The Preventive Conservation Cycle also returns, driven by the Culture Delegation in collaboration with the Council of Brotherhoods and Cofradías of Alcalá. Planned activities include the restoration of the base of the altar of the Virgin of the Eagle in October, the exhibition of the paintings 'Christ of Burgos' and 'Christ of the Forsaken' between October and November, and the display of restored pieces from the 'Immaculate Conception' between November and December.
The programme will be completed with conferences, book presentations, open days, and guided tours that will be announced throughout the academic year. The expansion works, which will begin in autumn, will proceed without interrupting the museum's cultural activities.
