Andalusian and local institutions gathered this morning in Seville to condemn the murder of a woman in Mairena del Aljarafe, which occurred last Saturday.

The delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Seville, Ricardo Sánchez, led a minute of silence this morning in the capital to show unanimous rejection of the latest gender-based violence crime recorded in the province. The event, held at the doors of the territorial delegation, was called urgently following the murder of a woman last Saturday in Mairena del Aljarafe, an incident that has shocked the region.

Wide institutional representation

The gathering brought together high-ranking regional and municipal officials. Among those present were the Secretary General of Families, Equality, Gender Violence and Diversity of the Junta de Andalucía, Concha Cardesa; the coordinator of the Andalusian Institute of Women in Seville, Mercedes Soriano; and the territorial delegate for Social Inclusion, Youth, Families and Equality, María Luisa Cava. Other territorial delegates from the Andalusian administration also attended, according to sources from the event.

The mayor of Mairena del Aljarafe, Antonio Conde, attended along with members of the municipal corporation from the town where the events occurred. The General Director of Employment, Family and Equality and Associations of the City Council of Seville, Isabel Díaz, also wanted to join in expressing condemnation. The presence of representatives from both municipalities reflects the institutional coordination against gender-based violence.

A gesture of unity and support for the family

The minute of silence, which lasted approximately one minute, took place in a solemn atmosphere. Attendees maintained absolute silence, gazing ahead, before breaking into a light applause. According to the Government delegate, such events aim to "convey all support to the victim's family and reiterate the administrations' commitment to combating gender-based violence."

The victim, whose further details have not been disclosed out of respect for her privacy, adds to the list of women murdered by gender-based violence in Andalucía this year. In the province of Seville, this crime raises the number of fatalities to three in 2026, according to official records. The City Council of Mairena del Aljarafe has declared three days of official mourning, and new community gatherings are expected to be called in the coming days.

For the residents of Mairena del Aljarafe and the rest of the province, this incident serves as a new wake-up call regarding the need to strengthen protection resources for women. The Junta de Andalucía reminds that the phone number 900 200 999 is available 24 hours a day for victims of gender-based violence, and any emergency should be reported to 112.
