The Youth Area of La Rinconada is organising a free 12-hour workshop in August for young people aged 14 to 18 that combines reading and social media, inspired by the BookTok phenomenon.
The Youth Area of the La Rinconada Town Council has launched a new workshop called 'Viral Readings' for August, an initiative aimed at bringing reading closer to teenagers through the BookTok phenomenon, the TikTok community of readers that has revolutionised the way books are recommended.
The free course will consist of six sessions of two hours each, from 10:00 to 12:00, at the La Estación Youth Centre. The scheduled dates are August 7, 19, 21, 24, 26, and 28, totalling 12 hours of training.
The Youth and Childhood Delegate, Mercedes Bueno, explained that “social media is part of the daily life of teenagers, so it is essential to take advantage of these spaces as educational and cultural tools.” Instead of a traditional approach, the project proposes a dynamic experience where young people discover books that match their interests and learn to express their opinions creatively.
During the workshop, participants will learn to recommend books attractively, create digital content with simple tools, and develop communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills. They will start recording and editing short videos with their mobile phones, paying attention to aspects such as lighting, framing, and composition.
Additionally, a critical perspective on the use of social media will be encouraged, promoting respectful communication and a positive use of these platforms. Reading will be voluntary and tailored to the tastes and interests of each participant, without the need for prior knowledge of video editing or communication on social media.
The activity is primarily aimed at young people aged 14 to 18 who are registered or studying in La Rinconada. Registrations can be made at the La Estación Youth Centre or via email at juventud2@aytolarinconada.es.
This initiative is part of the council's commitment to providing educational leisure alternatives during the summer, combining the promotion of reading with new technologies. BookTok, the viral phenomenon on TikTok, has enabled thousands of young people worldwide to rediscover the pleasure of reading, and now La Rinconada aims to replicate that success locally.
For local residents, it represents an opportunity for their teenage children to make the most of the holidays to develop digital and communication skills while approaching reading in a more engaging way. The workshop is in addition to other youth activities scheduled for the summer, such as urban camps and language workshops.
