The incident occurred on Monday just before 7:00 AM on María de Molina street. The alleged perpetrator was arrested hours later at a nearby residence after hiding the vehicle.

An 80-year-old resident of Guillena, identified as J.I., died on the morning of September 14 after being run over at the beginning of María de Molina street. Medical services could only certify his death at the Guillena Health Centre, where he was taken after residents alerted 112 Emergency Services.

The call from residents was made just minutes before 7:00 AM. Guardia Civil, Local Police, and health services arrived at the scene, finding the victim on the ground with no trace of the vehicle or the person driving it.

According to eyewitnesses, a man got out of the car, checked the condition of the victim, and then returned to the vehicle and drove off towards the Gergal Reservoir. The Local Police of Guillena took over the proceedings and, with the help of witnesses and footage from local cameras, located the car hidden in a nearby home, where the alleged driver was barricaded.

Officers secured the area while awaiting judicial authorization to enter the residence. The surrender of the alleged perpetrator occurred at 12:00 PM on the same Monday. The vehicle was towed away to preserve evidence.

After the investigation concluded, the Local Police referred the case to the Guardia Civil, and the detainee was taken to court at 3:30 PM. He may face charges of homicide due to gross negligence and abandonment of the duty to rescue, with severity depending on the results of toxicological analyses. He is also facing penalties for speeding and for invading the opposite lane while turning left from Avenida Alcalde Justo Padilla Burgos onto María de Molina street.

The Guillena City Council has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and thanked the community for their cooperation and the actions of the security forces, especially the Local Police, in resolving the case.

"Much strength and all our support in these very difficult times on behalf of the entire town"

The council is now awaiting the judicial resolution. The case is in the hands of the courts following the surrender of the alleged perpetrator and the removal of the vehicle as evidence.
