The Town Hall of Guillena received an award at the Sevilla Basketball Gala for organising the Provincial Babybasket Final. The mayor, Lorenzo Medina, collected the accolade in Umbrete.
The Sevilla Delegation of the Andalusian Basketball Federation presented a special mention to the Town Hall of Guillena on Thursday, 24th September, during the Sevilla Basketball Gala, held at the Theatre of La Villa in Umbrete. The mayor, Lorenzo Medina, and the Sports Councillor, Manuel Vázquez, were responsible for collecting the award.
The award recognises the organisation of the Provincial Babybasket Final Fiesta, which took place on 19th April at the 'Christian Hernández' Municipal Sports Pavilion in Guillena. It featured 10 teams from the province and around 90 boys and girls aged between 5 and 7 years, with no results or rankings.
Participating clubs included CDB Guillena, La Vega (with two teams), CB Coria, CB Utrera, Náutico Sevilla (also with two teams), Club Baloncesto Gelves, and CB Los Palacios. The event was supported by the Sports Area of the Town Hall and the Club Baloncesto Guillena.
"It is an honour to receive a special distinction representing the Town Hall of Guillena for our commitment and promotion of basketball in the training categories and support for the growth of this sport. This is a distinction that must be shared with CB Guillena, its directors, players, and the families who support this sport, as well as all those involved in our municipal sports schools," declared Medina.
The mayor also spoke at the gala to thank for the recognition and to call for more institutional support for less media-covered disciplines.
"I thank the Federation for the distinction and hope it serves to understand that in sports like basketball, which have such noble values but less media exposure, administrations will indeed need to carry out greater positive discrimination," he affirmed.
Municipal authorities, club directors and members, as well as family and friends of the athletes, attended the event. For the families of Guillena, the recognition represents support for the work of the municipal sports schools and the local basketball talent.
