Members of Núcleo Nacional participated in the protest against the Islamic centre in Polígono Sur. The gathering proceeded without incidents, although some attendees hung ham legs on the fencing.
The protest held this Monday in Polígono Sur against the construction of a mosque in the Las Tres Mil Viviendas area saw the presence of members from the far-right group Núcleo Nacional. The group, which aims to enter politics with the creation of the Noviembre Nacional party, had called for participation through its social media.
The demonstration, which brought together local residents and supporters of Vox, proceeded without altercations. However, some attendees hung ham legs on the fencing of the plot where the Islamic Cultural Centre is planned, a symbolic gesture against the Muslim religion, which prohibits the consumption of pork.
National Police officers arrived at the scene with several vans to ensure order. The gathering took place a day before the Urban Planning Management of the Seville City Council grants the building permit to the Fundación Mezquita de Sevilla, the promoter of the project.
The permit has been backed by technical and legal reports confirming that the initiative complies with urban regulations. These documents were requested by Vox, which, despite confirming the legality of the project, has reiterated its opposition and called for new reports.
Officials from the Seville City Council have defended the granting of the permit as it concerns a project on private land and with private funding. Municipal sources indicated that denying it under these conditions would be a breach of the law, as the granting of permits is a regulated act and the City Council must ensure legal certainty.
The construction of the Islamic cultural centre, which will include a mosque, has sparked intense debate in the neighbourhood. Residents opposed to the project have protested on several occasions, while the local Muslim community defends the need for an adequate place of worship.
The presence of Núcleo Nacional has heightened political tension. The far-right group has attempted to capitalise on local discontent. However, sources from the organisation stated that their participation was peaceful and limited to supporting the residents.
The City Council has reiterated that the decision on the permit will be based solely on urban planning criteria. The granting is scheduled for Tuesday, and once granted, the Fundación Mezquita de Sevilla will be able to start construction.
Residents opposing the project have announced that they will resort to legal action if the permit is granted. Meanwhile, Vox has collected signatures to try to halt the process, although the municipal government insists that there is no legal basis to prevent the construction.
