The popular Jaime Rubio was inaugurated this Monday as the new mayor of Los Molares, succeeding José Veira, who resigned to be the PP candidate for the Mayor of Dos Hermanas. Rubio promises to continue the management model and focus on access to housing.
The Los Molares City Council held an extraordinary plenary session this Monday in which the popular Jaime Rubio took office as the new mayor of the municipality, replacing José Veira, who has resigned from the position and his council seat to lead the PP candidacy for the Mayor of Dos Hermanas, the second most populous city in the province of Seville.
Rubio, previously the councillor for Works, Parks and Gardens, takes up the mayoral baton with the absolute majority enjoyed by the PP in the City Council, with seven councillors compared to four from the PSOE. The socialists, for their part, chose to absent themselves from the investiture plenary, showing their rejection of the government's management.
In his investiture speech, the new mayor wanted to acknowledge the legacy of his predecessor, whom he defined as "a great legacy to build upon with even more strength." He emphasised that "the progress of Los Molares will not stop" and defended the continuity of the "serious, transformative and people-centred management model" that, in his opinion, has characterised the local government in recent years.
Rubio promised "stability and rigor" to the residents, as well as all his "energy and enthusiasm" to tackle the challenges of the municipality. Among them, he pointed to access to housing as his "main political commitment," considering it to be "the great challenge of today's society and also of Los Molares." He pledged to promote public land, affordable housing and "real solutions" so that "young people do not have to leave and families do not feel suffocated by housing prices."
The new mayor has previous management experience at the helm of the areas of Works, Parks and Gardens, which has allowed him to understand the needs of the municipality firsthand. In his speech, he called to "walk together in this new stage" and promised to "govern for everyone," listening to the citizens. Rubio will face the ballot box in less than a year when the next municipal elections are held.
José Veira's departure comes after more than seven years at the head of the City Council. Veira became mayor in 2019 with an overwhelming absolute majority, obtaining more than 63% of the votes, taking the government from the PSOE. In 2023, he reaffirmed that majority, with seven popular councillors against four socialists. In his farewell, Veira defended his management and recalled that his promise was not to serve more than two terms to promote political renewal.
The event was attended by officials from the Seville PP, such as the Secretary General, Agustín Aguilera; the spokesperson in the Provincial Council, Martín Torres; and the mayors of Lora del Río, Almadén de la Plata, San Juan de Aznalfarache and Constantina. The discordant note was provided by the Socialist Group, which absented itself from the plenary and denounced on social media that the PP has left "seven lost years for Los Molares, without changing anything, abandoned works and chaos" in municipal management, as well as "clientelism."
With Jaime Rubio's investiture, Los Molares begins a new political stage, with an eye on the upcoming municipal elections and the challenge of addressing the housing needs of its residents. The new mayor has expressed confidence in being able to continue the "progress" initiated by Veira, although the time to demonstrate this will be limited, as there is less than a year until the elections.
