An incident at kilometre 30 of the AP-4, near Los Palacios and Villafranca, has forced the closure of a lane and generated two-kilometre queues. The Junta de Andalucía takes this opportunity to demand the expansion of the road from the Ministry.
The AP-4 has once again been the scene of an accident complicating traffic between Seville and Cádiz. This Wednesday, an incident at kilometre point 30, near Los Palacios and Villafranca, forced the closure of the left lane towards Cádiz, causing delays of up to two kilometres. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has confirmed the incident, which adds to the usual problems of this motorway.
The accident coincided with the Junta de Andalucía's demand for the Ministry of Transport to expedite the construction of a third lane on the AP-4. The Minister of Development and Mobility, Mario Muñoz-Atanet, has urged the central government to speed up the project's procedures, which is currently in an initial phase. This request comes after the initial approval of the technical document and the environmental impact study for the section between Dos Hermanas and Las Cabezas de San Juan, in the province of Seville.
Muñoz-Atanet described this step as an administrative advance but warned that the project remains at a very early stage, despite more than two years having passed since its drafting began. After this provisional approval, the file will be subjected to public information through an announcement in the Official State Bulletin, before continuing with the rest of the processing.
The minister pointed out that the environmental assessment and the drafting of the construction project are still pending, so he has called on the Ministry to intensify efforts to expedite an action that he considers strategic for mobility between Seville and Cádiz. Additionally, he defended the need to implement more effective temporary measures while the expansion of the motorway is carried out.
Specifically, Muñoz-Atanet criticized that the opening of the hard shoulder over a three-kilometre stretch has not achieved the expected effectiveness in reducing delays. The Andalusian official emphasized that the goal must be to improve traffic safety and fluidity as soon as possible, through a detailed analysis of traffic flows that allows for actions to alleviate congestion during peak hours.
The minister also expressed concern that the currently planned project is limited to the section located in the province of Seville and that the timelines envisaged are insufficient to meet the needs of an infrastructure that daily handles a high volume of traffic. The AP-4 is one of the main communication routes between the two provinces, with an average of over 40,000 vehicles per day, according to DGT data.
Accidents on this motorway are frequent, especially in the stretch between Dos Hermanas and Las Cabezas de San Juan, where the lack of a third lane causes regular delays. Drivers heading to Cádiz from Seville face daily queues that stretch for kilometres, especially during peak hours. The Junta's demand aims for the Ministry to expedite a project that has been pending for years.
For now, the accident on Wednesday has been resolved and the closed lane has been reopened, according to the DGT. However, the incident has once again highlighted the need to improve the infrastructure. Users of the AP-4 hope that the measures announced by the Junta and the Ministry will soon translate into a definitive solution.
The Junta de Andalucía has reiterated its commitment to continue pressing the central government to make the expansion of the AP-4 a reality as soon as possible. In the meantime, drivers will have to continue facing delays and the risks of travelling on a road that urgently needs action.
