The Tourism Delegation and the Bakers' Association are organising workshops, night tours, escape room, and kayaking routes on Fridays and Saturdays in October at La Harinera, the Molino del Algarrobo, and Oromana.
The City Council of Alcalá de Guadaíra, through its Tourism Delegation, along with the Bakers' Association of Alcalá, Fica, and the production company Engranajes Culturales, has organised a programme of activities to commemorate World Bread Day, which is celebrated on 16 October. The proposals will take place on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the month in venues such as La Harinera, the Molino del Algarrobo, and the Oromana park.
The municipal delegate for Tourism, Christopher Rivas, presented the poster at the Harinera del Guadaíra. He explained that this year an escape room has been added to the usual activities, which include workshops, theatrical visits, gymkhanas, night tours, kayaking routes, a solidarity bread sale, and games related to bread.
"With this set of activities, we continue to highlight the historical, cultural, economic, and heritage significance of Alcalá's bread. This year, our bakers, who put in so much effort every year in organising activities, are joined by the Federation of Industrialists and Traders as well as the company Engranajes Culturales and Riverízate, which allows us to take a further step in promoting our bread as a tourist attraction," Rivas explained.
The councillor also highlighted that "we have an October ahead of us in which we can enjoy and learn about the heritage, the history of bread, engage in sports, and listen to flamenco." He also thanked the work of associations, professionals, and entities, especially the Bakers' Association of Alcalá.
The night tours of the mills, titled "Under the Light of the Lanterns", will take place on Fridays 2, 9, 16, and 23 and Saturdays 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 19:30 hours. The tour reveals the industrial heritage alongside the river and mills such as San Juan, Benarosa, and Oromana. Additionally, the Harinera del Guadaíra will open its doors on Saturdays 3, 10, 17, and 24 from 11:00 to 13:30 hours.
The Storytelling of Bread and the Games of Bread will take place on those same days and at the same time, with sessions every 30 minutes at the Harinera. The escape room "Treasure Hunt in the Harinera" will last 90 minutes and will be held on 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 20:00 hours; participants will need to solve puzzles and decipher codes in this historic space.
The micro theatrical visits to the Molino del Algarrobo will allow visitors to learn about the bread-making process in Alcalá from an old baker. These will be from 11:00 to 13:15 hours, with sessions every 15 minutes. At the end of each morning session, the Harinera will host a small live flamenco show titled "Songs of Alcalá Bread": on Saturdays 11, 18, and 25 at 13:30 hours, featuring performances by Saray Benítez and Joaquín de Alcalá (11th), Jesús Ponce and Joaquín Alcalá (18th), and Diego Benítez and Joaquín Alcalá (25th). No reservation is required.
The micro bread workshops, taught by the Bakers' Association, will teach participants how to make a loaf of bread and learn about its history. These will take place from 11:00 to 13:30 hours every 30 minutes. In parallel, there will be a solidarity bread sale benefiting the Prolaya Association.
The kayaking routes and mill gymkhanas, organised by Riverízate, will cost 5 euros and can be booked on the company's website. On Saturdays, there will be a refreshment service at the Harinera.
Online reservations for the activities will be published in stages: for the weekend of 3 October, from Monday 28 September at 12:00 hours; for the weekend of 10 October, from Monday 5 at 12:00; for the weekend of 17 October, from Tuesday 13 at 12:00; and for the weekend of 24 October, from Monday 19 at 12:00 hours.
