Natalia, 34, died in the double earthquake in Venezuela while travelling with her family. Her husband and daughter were unharmed. The Town Hall of Guillena has declared official mourning.
Natalia, a resident of the Torre de la Reina district in Guillena (Seville), has died as a result of the double earthquake that struck last week in Venezuela. The 34-year-old woman was travelling with her husband and daughter when the tremors occurred. According to municipal sources, her two family members managed to save their lives.
The incident has shocked the Seville municipality, where the victim's mother, who decided not to travel to Venezuela, resides. This Monday, the Town Hall of Guillena held a minute of silence at the door of the Town Hall, attended by numerous residents and the mayor, Lorenzo Medina. The event is part of a call from the Andalusian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FAMP) and the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) in solidarity with the Venezuelan people.
Natalia, of Hispanic-Colombian nationality, has been found dead among the rubble, as reported by Radio Sevilla. Until this Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had confirmed 17 Spaniards dead and 138 missing due to the earthquake. The tragedy has particularly affected the Spanish community in Venezuela, where many reside or were visiting.
The Town Hall of Guillena has declared a day of official mourning from noon. Natalia's mother, who joined the minute of silence, has received support from the residents. "It is an irreparable loss," declared the mayor, who expressed his condolences to the family. The Town Hall has announced that it will assist in the repatriation of the body.
The double earthquake that shook the coast of Venezuela last week has caused thousands of victims and incalculable material damage. The international community has mobilised rescue teams, although efforts have been hampered by political instability and a lack of resources. In Spain, the news has reopened the debate on consular assistance to citizens abroad.
The mayor of Guillena has urged the public to remain calm and has thanked the expressions of solidarity. "Natalia was a beloved woman in the village, always willing to help," recalled a resident. The funeral will take place in the coming days, once the body arrives in Spain.
