The Town Hall of Guillena has obtained a state aid of 180,000 euros to acquire a 22-seat electric bus that will improve connections between the municipality's hubs and with the capital, Sevilla.
The Town Hall of Guillena has secured a grant of 180,000 euros from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) for the purchase of a 22-seat electric bus. This was announced by the mayor, Lorenzo Medina, who highlighted that the vehicle will enhance and expand the intercity connection service in the municipality, while also reducing CO2 emissions.
The aid is part of a national call for grants for innovative projects aimed at territorial transformation and combating depopulation. In total, the province of Sevilla will receive 845,910.70 euros for four initiatives, one of which is Guillena's, named 'Connected Territory, Shared Opportunities: Municipal Mobility System for Dispersed Hubs'.
The electric bus will be integrated into the Circular Bus service already operated by the Mobility Area of the Town Hall. Currently, this route connects the hubs of Guillena, Torre de la Reina, and Las Pajanosas from Monday to Friday, in the morning and afternoon. According to municipal sources, the new vehicle will increase the frequency and capacity of the service, facilitating the movements of residents within the municipality and their connection to the intercity bus linking to the capital, Sevilla.
The initiative responds to MITECO's goal of supporting projects that generate employment, diversify the economy, improve public services, and help retain population in rural areas. In the case of Guillena, improving mobility is considered key to preventing the isolation of smaller hubs and providing a sustainable alternative to private vehicles.
Mayor Lorenzo Medina has positively assessed the granting of the aid: “We have secured a grant from the Government of Spain of 180,000 euros for the acquisition of a 22-seat electric bus that will improve and expand the intercity connection service in our municipality, as well as contribute to lower CO2 emissions in residents' travels.”
The project is currently in the planning phase, and the Town Hall is working on the specifications for the vehicle tender. The electric bus is expected to be operational in the coming months, once the administrative and acquisition processes are completed.
This grant adds to other initiatives by the Town Hall in the field of sustainable mobility, such as the gradual electrification of the municipal fleet and the promotion of charging points for electric vehicles in the municipality.
