The municipality will celebrate on September 18 a day with a conference on the journey to Mars and an astronomical observation at the Arab Baths. Registrations are already open at the Municipal Library.
Space exploration is once again the focus in Palomares del Río. The Astromares association has organised for September 18, 2026 a day that combines scientific dissemination and direct observation of the night sky.
The first event will take place at 19:30 hours in the Carlos Álvarez Novoa Municipal Theatre, featuring the conference “Beyond the Horizon: The Path to Mars”. It will be presented by Marga Macías, an astronomical communicator from the FAAE and the Astromares Association.
The talk will review what the red planet is really like, what the missions that have explored it have contributed, and whether there is any possibility of humans travelling there. The main obstacles of a manned mission will be addressed: distances and travel times, launch windows, radiation, gravity, atmosphere, extreme temperatures, and the need to obtain water, oxygen, and food.
There will also be discussions on the physical and psychological toll that such a long journey in such a hostile environment would take on the crew. The organisation has emphasised that the activity is designed for all audiences, with no prior knowledge of astronomy required, while maintaining scientific rigor.
The second activity will begin at 21:00 hours at the Arab Baths, under the title “From Palomares to the Sky 2026”. Telescopes will be set up to observe the Moon and Saturn, as well as other objects in the night sky.
Registrations to participate are managed through the “Manuel Casado Moreno” Municipal Library. You can also call 637 960 750 from 9:00 to 14:00 hours or write to bibliotecapalomares@gmail.com.
The day is part of the municipality's commitment to bring science closer to the residents and offers an opportunity to enjoy a night of observation in a unique setting like the Arab Baths.
