The town of Mairena del Aljarafe has called a minute of silence for Ana, a 44-year-old resident allegedly killed by her partner. The murder is the sixth femicide in Andalusia this year.

The minute of silence will take place at 11:00 am on Monday in front of the main town hall building, following an extraordinary meeting of the spokesperson board called by Mayor Antonio Conde. The event aims to honor the memory of Ana, whose life was cut short in a suspected gender violence attack.

The crime occurred in the early hours of Saturday, when the alleged perpetrator, also 44 years old, reportedly stabbed Ana in their home. It was their 13-year-old son who, at around 1:30 am, ran into the street shouting that his father was stabbing his mother. Police arriving at the scene found Ana dead and the man seriously injured from self-inflicted wounds. He remains hospitalized under police custody, with the Guardia Civil leading the investigation.

If confirmed as a gender violence case, Ana’s death brings the total number of femicides in Andalusia to six in 2026 and 25 across Spain. This tragic statistic underscores the persistent epidemic of violence against women, despite increased awareness and prevention efforts. In 2025, Spain recorded 48 gender violence murders, according to official data, indicating that the problem remains deeply rooted.

Local authorities have expressed their shock and solidarity. In a statement, the municipality emphasized the need for collective action to eradicate such violence. The mayor is expected to address the media after the minute of silence, urging the public to reject all forms of machismo and to support victims.

The community has been shaken by the incident. Neighbors described Ana as a kind and hardworking woman. A small makeshift memorial of flowers and candles has appeared near the family home. Many are calling for stronger protective measures and more resources for victims.

For those experiencing or witnessing gender violence, help is available 24/7 through multiple channels. The national helpline 016 offers confidential support, and calls are not reflected on phone bills. Also reachable via email 016-online@igualdad.gob.es or WhatsApp at 600 000 016. In emergencies, dial 112 or contact the National Police (091) or Guardia Civil (062). The ALERTCOPS app can also be activated to send a geolocated alert to police without making a call.

“We must not look away. Every femicide is a failure of society. We need to educate, prevent, and protect,” said a spokesperson from a local women’s rights group.

The judiciary has already issued a restraining order against the suspect, who will be brought before a court once he is medically fit. The case has reopened debates on the effectiveness of current legislation and the need for more aggressive early intervention.

As the town gathers to remember Ana, the silent tribute will be a powerful reminder of the work still to be done. The minute of silence is scheduled for 11:00 am in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento; residents are invited to attend and show their support for the fight against gender violence.
