The presence of the Asian hornet has been detected in several areas of the province of Seville, including the vicinity of Espartinas. The Town Hall has released a guide to prevent nests and act safely.

The Asian hornet has been detected in several areas of the province of Seville, according to the Espartinas Town Hall, which has published a series of recommendations for residents on how to prevent its nesting and what to do if they find a nest.

This species, non-native but considered European, is not classified as an invasive species in Spain, which prevents the creation of official protocols, allocation of public resources, and coordinated action. It is distinguished by its copper-red colour with a yellow band and usually nests in human infrastructures, natural cavities, and even underground.

One of the main risks is its attack on bee hives, from which it feeds on honey and larvae, potentially affecting local beekeeping and ecological balance.

To prevent it from nesting in homes, the Town Hall recommends sealing cracks and gaps in façades and roofs, installing mosquito nets on windows and patios, keeping organic waste bins closed, and avoiding stagnant water in pots or containers.

If a nest is detected, the main warning is clear: never handle it on your own. If it appears in a private residence, one should isolate the room, keep people and pets away, and contact a specialised pest control company.

If the nest is in a public space, residents should report it to the Espartinas Town Hall by calling 955 714 860 or the Local Police at 607 96 68 08. In case of immediate risk, the emergency number is 112.
